Hard rock/metal band Melvins are based around singer and guitarist Buzz Osborne (known as "King Buzzo") and drummer Dale Crover. Taking influence initially from hardcore punk acts like Black Flag, but adding the slow and thick guitars of metal bands like Black Sabbath, they have forged a three-decade career without ever achieving mainstream commercial success. They have developed a small army of… Read more in Amazon's Melvins Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank Goodness For Melvins, February 26, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Electroretard (Audio CD)
In a time where "Alternative Music" is nothing more than a big, ugly hoax, it's refreshing to see this disc. Normally, I am suspicious of a CD where almost half of the songs are covers, but King Buzzo and the gang have rid me of that phobia. This disc is almost worth it's price alone for the fabulous cover of "Youth of America" by the Wipers, a band that paved the way for bands like Melvins and, you got it, Nirvana. The band has never sounded more urgent than on this 9+ minute monster. The Pink Floyd cover is also mindblowing. Then, there is "Lovely Butterflies," which is song only Melvins could pen. If you don't own any Melvins discs now, buy this one and see what you have been missing out on (then you can do what I have already done and purchase their entire catalog). I would write more, but I'm having trouble typing and listening to this at the same time.

4.0 out of 5 stars For the Completist, July 6, 2004

Any rabid fan of what has become and what has been the melvins should seek out this album. An album of 'covers', some of which happen to be catalog melvins titles, the band dramatically reinterprets what's gone before and very liberally makes it their own, 'Lovely Butterfly' and 'Revolve' stand out. A Cows cover, a Pink Floyd cover and a twelve minute marathon 'Youth of America' make appearances and round out an oddities collection done most proper by the greatest band of all time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Do you have a Mullet and a Modern 2001 camaro?, February 25, 2001

Get ready to rock! If you own all the albums, or are just getting into the Melvins, you will quickly see that the Melvins continue to bestow upon you gobs and gobs of coolness. This album pushes their style forward and while exmphasizing their excellent production skills. This album is modern, yet rocks you to true lower E angst style as only the Melvins can do.
