Thank Goodness For Melvins,
By A Customer
This review is from: Electroretard (Audio CD)
In a time where "Alternative Music" is nothing more than a big, ugly hoax, it's refreshing to see this disc. Normally, I am suspicious of a CD where almost half of the songs are covers, but King Buzzo and the gang have rid me of that phobia. This disc is almost worth it's price alone for the fabulous cover of "Youth of America" by the Wipers, a band that paved the way for bands like Melvins and, you got it, Nirvana. The band has never sounded more urgent than on this 9+ minute monster. The Pink Floyd cover is also mindblowing. Then, there is "Lovely Butterflies," which is song only Melvins could pen. If you don't own any Melvins discs now, buy this one and see what you have been missing out on (then you can do what I have already done and purchase their entire catalog). I would write more, but I'm having trouble typing and listening to this at the same time.

For the Completist,

Any rabid fan of what has become and what has been the melvins should seek out this album. An album of 'covers', some of which happen to be catalog melvins titles, the band dramatically reinterprets what's gone before and very liberally makes it their own, 'Lovely Butterfly' and 'Revolve' stand out. A Cows cover, a Pink Floyd cover and a twelve minute marathon 'Youth of America' make appearances and round out an oddities collection done most proper by the greatest band of all time.

Do you have a Mullet and a Modern 2001 camaro?,

Get ready to rock! If you own all the albums, or are just getting into the Melvins, you will quickly see that the Melvins continue to bestow upon you gobs and gobs of coolness. This album pushes their style forward and while exmphasizing their excellent production skills. This album is modern, yet rocks you to true lower E angst style as only the Melvins can do.

The most underrated band,

This is definately one of the best MELVINS cd's ever! It has an ambient feel to it. Every track is amazing, even the ones that were re-worked for the new record. If you're a Melvins fan, you should definately pick this cd up.

dEEEEEEEEEEEE-light FULL,

i mean, C'MON man. its MELVINS. half the fun is not getting what you'd expect. i've readheardseen some people comment that the band is only good when they're doing heavy, grunge/sludge/metal type s**t like in all their early stuff. but to me half the fun of the band is never really knowing whats gonna happen next--ie, ELECTORETARD or THE BOOTLICKER. y'dig? SO, to all semi-fans who are interested in either becoming fans or deciding they dont' like the band, do what I did...get HOUDINI and/or STONER WITCH then switch up the next two purchases by getting something early, like GLUEY PORCH TREATMENTS or OZMA and also getting later stuff like ELECTRORETARD or HOSTILE AMBIENT TAKEOVER or even their colaboration with Lustmord PIGS OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE to see what Buzz and Dale are REALLY all about.

great late grunge, and how about that disturbing artwork?!,

You may hear some of this via napster, the radio, etc. but then you'll never see most of the artwork. disturbing, in a way that the houdini artwork was disturbing. fun fun fun!!! Matches the music's theme. The music --- although it's mostly remixes and covers to keep melvins fans satiated til the next album (due in 2-3 mos?), is very very good, and I would say a good intro to them and only album to have from them (besides houdini/stoner witch? (ok,besides everything else)). The remix of Revolve was interesting and dark techno (loved the funny old computer blip-bleep tones between refrains). Youth of America cover too is good. IMO they're one of the top 3 grunge(?) bands that's consistently worth a damn today. I first heard them out of the blue in Milwaukee opening for primus (1993 - seas of cheese tour), and primus paled in comparison. They're playing 5/14/2001 @ slims in sf, I'll be there), and starting their us tour 4/13 in SanDiego (europe from 3-15 on) see: ...

You people are nuts!,

I am going against the grain here. Ozma sucks! Gluey is boring! I know that most of you would kill me now if you had the chance. But let us face facts here. The Melvins are now one of the best bands ever. They really were influential and creative way back when, but so was black sabbath. and i hate sabbath. electroretard has an extremely rad version of revolve, youth of america is 8 minutes of mind numbing bliss, and everything else is great. Buzz, you have come a long way. Electroretard is great, however hostile amient takeover is one of the best albums ever. Rock onward young consumers!

doesn't rock very hard,
By A Customer
This review is from: Electroretard (Audio CD)
a lot of self-indulgent syntho blips and squeaks instead of guitars, and the cover version of "interstellar overdrive" is just a straight remake of syd barrett pink floyd, only not as dynamic. i've listened to it twice, just to be fair, but i'm irritated at myself that i spent money on this.
