Format: Paperback
I'm not a musician, but I've been listening and following jazz for almost 60 years. I've read many of the books written about or by jazz musicians. There are many good ones out there but Elegant Soul is, by far, my very favorite. Okay, I met Gene Harris several times, but I've met other jazz musicians from time to time.

Janie Harris did an incredible job in telling the story of her husband-one of the stellar jazz pianists-perhaps the best blues pianist ever!

It would have been very easy for Janie to gloss over some of the uncomfortable stories or even ignored them. Instead she displayed tremendous courage in writing about some of the

personal issues that plagued Gene until his death.

Brilliantly told, these stories come alive (you can almost hear Ray Brown on bass, or Milt Jackson on vibes) and while the book is certainly based on jazz, those whose knowledge of jazz is simple or even non-existent would appreciate most of it. The last few chapters that deal with Gene's illness are particularly sad and you might want to have a handkerchief handy.

I am from Gene Harris's hometown and grew up with his younger brother and children. It was wonderful to read of his childhood years and to learn about so many Jazz greats through Gene's experience as told by his wife, Janis.

The item was out of stock when I originally ordered it. Within three weeks, I received an email indicating the book was restocked, and it was shipped out to me
shortly after in brand new condition.
