This review is from: Elegy For a Lady. (Paperback)
One may find it difficult to take much from reading a play that is only 15 pages of actual text. Typically performed in conjunction with "Some Kind of Love Story" by Arthur Miller, this play also explores an unusual kind of relationship.
The man in the story is seeking a gift for his dying mistress. While he is uncertain of what she is dying, he seems convinced that she does not have long. The story is set in a boutique which employs the other character known only as proprietress. As the man seeks a gift for his lover, he explores the nature of his relationship in discussion with the proprietress. Through this discussion, he seemingly arrives at the superficial basis for the affair. The current state of indifference toward the man by the mistress still presents a dilemma for the man. The lover was acquired to bring the man good times, making the relationship unfathomable in illness. In his last act, the reader sees the man still does not understand the divide. Seldom performed, reading "Elegy for a Lady" may be the best opportunity to explore it. But to be honest, there is not much text to read.
