Editorial Reviews

For his first all-instrumental album, slide guitar master Sonny Landreth assembled an extraordinary group of musicians that included guest guitarists Joe Satriani and Eric Johnson, steel drum legend Robert Greenidge and members of the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra directed by Maestro Mariusz Smolij. With elements from many different musical influences - Rock, Blues, Classical, Zydeco, Country, Jazz and Reggae - Landreth's melodic and harmonically rich compositions shift seamlessly and astonishingly to make this his most diverse and adventurous work to date.

Most Brilliant Unique & original instramental album i have ever heard! Just great musicianship on this album. Sonny Landreth has done a great job on this from prodution & mixing sound & the song writing as well. This is a very textured album. For one i dont think i have ever heard a slide guitar instramental album ever. Sonny pulls it off perfectly. There are many different types of music & i think the album title fits. It is an Elemental Journey through music. On this album there are blues textures & rock' country' caribbean style music & easy listening as well. But he has mixed all Elements together to where with his slide playing and mixture of styles makes it like no other instrumental album. He also has made the music to where there is background music and his solo fills are taking place of vocal lines like the guitar is the melody of what the words should be. Eric Johnson & Joe Satriani make an appearance on the album as well but i dont think it was needed Sonny held this together quite well. Very beautiful album! If you are a fan of Sonny Landreth you will enjoy this album & if you are a guitar player pick this up take notes & study. There is something for all types of musical tastes to enjoy on this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Always exceptional! July 5, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I have been waiting for this all-instrumental album for a very long time. Without a doubt, it is worth the wait. Landreth's guitar work is always exceptional, moving between the aural pyrotechnics that makes his playing live so exciting, and the sweet, lilting melodies that fill the listener with yearning. This album brings all his masterful writing and playing together. Some tunes, like Brave New Girl and Heavy Heart Rising immediately grip the listener in melodic passion; other pieces, like For You And Forever, reveal their beauty in repeated listenings. As ever, Landreth's fine craftsmanship attracts other fine musicians to contribute, and this album is no exception, with Robert Greenidge on steel drums and Joe Satriani on a forceful solo. I drive a 32 mile commute, and this CD has been my constant companion for weeks, never tiresome, always reassuring, giving me energy for my Elemental Journey home.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Best Kept Secret That Needs To Be Discovered May 25, 2012
Format:Audio CD
The masterful artistry of Sonny Landreth, shines on this, his first all instrumental offering. Engineered By Joe Satriani, who also appears on the blistering 'Gaia's Tribe'. If you appreciate the technical aspects of slide guitar playing, as well as just enjoying the music, by all means, discover Sonny Landreth!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Album! July 9, 2012

I own many Sonny Landreth albums. He is my favorite slide player. This album while still sounding very Sonny is at the same time so fresh and new sounding to me. I love that it's an instrumental album and Sonny really takes us into new musical territory on it. This may be my favorite Sonny Landreth album, time will tell. Do yourself a favor and buy this album. One of the true living guitar greats!

I've just finished listening to Elemental Journey for the third time and must say that this is one of his best ever. If you've never listened to Sonny, this is a fantastic introduction. I've got some road trips coming up and this CD is going to get a bunch of play time.

5.0 out of 5 stars SLIPPIN AND SLIDIN July 5, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I want to say I bought this cd after one listen I was hooked. Some of the best instrumental music I have heard in awhile and the last was Joe Satriani Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards and wouldn't you know he does a guest appearance on Sonny's Elemental Journey. Eric Johnson also is a featured guest on one song. But Sonny is the feature show here put it on press the random repeat button and you are set. I will have to say some of the best instrumental players are coming out of Nashville and Austin go figure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Landreth Does It Again August 12, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Elemental Journey is the eleventh solo effort by slide guitar phenom, Sonny Landreth and his fans particularly - and guitar music aficionados in general - are going to love this treasure chest full of great music.

The album is distinctive in that it is his most adventurous project so far as well as his first solely instrumental project and, like he did on his last CD (2008's From the Reach), he brought in some stellar talent to help him out.

For instance, Eric Johnson is again a guest, providing killer, spell-binding licks on the hypnotic Passionola. Let me put it to you this way: If you were to set off on a road trip with this tune on repeat, the interaction between Landreth and Johnson on this song would not have you so distracted that you would not see what's in front of you or have you run off the road, but you would miss a turn or two.

Then there's the viciously ruthless solo on the opening cut, Gaia Tribe, provided by the Joe Satriani. Wouldn't a collaborative CD from those two be an almost sinfully delicious treat? The steel drums of Robert Greenidge an eclectic Caribbean vibe on Forgotten Story.

Another Boomerocity favorite is Letting Go. I don't know how Sonny does it but he captures the exact feeling of the process of letting go. Letting go of disappointment; letting go of failure; letting go of a lost relationship of any kind; letting go of fear or needless inhibition. Landreth nails it with this tune.

These are just three of the eleven tunes that would have you under Landreth's spell within a few short notes. If you love great guitar work - especially all-instrumental albums, this album is a must-have.
