Great Azerbaijani Text!, March 31, 2008
This review is from: Elementary Azerbaijani (Turk Dilleri Arastirmalari Dizisi) (Azerbaijani Edition) (Paperback)
*Elementary Azerbaijani* presents the modern spoken language of Azerbaijan in a clear and useful manner. Each chapter contains numerous dialogues with lots of helpful vocabulary, grammatical explanations that the astute language learner will understand readily, and tons of exercises that both drill and work the concepts of the chapter. The book focuses on the current Latin-alphabet adaptation but includes several exercises to help familiarize the learner with the Cyrillic alphabet since the country is in a state of writing-system transition. There are Az-Eng and Eng-Az glossaries at the back of the book, and each chapter contains word lists of new vocabulary presented therein. There are CD recordings (available from the author) of the conversations and many exercises (all with clear pronunciation) to help train the learner's ear and speaking ability. I'm pleased with this volume and its companion recordings.

Learning Azerbaijani Abroad, November 30, 2010
This review is from: Elementary Azerbaijani (Turk Dilleri Arastirmalari Dizisi) (Azerbaijani Edition) (Paperback)
I found Dr. Oztopcu's Elementary Azerbaijani Primer an excellent introduction to this beautiful idiom. His approach is a fluent master's approach at letting the student know what is essential while giving glimpses of what is to come, but not imposing its mastery until the student has built the necessary basics.
The vocabulary is all practical and not superfluous in any manner. Moreover, even not having moved past the fourth unit, I have found that when I happened upon a Turkish soap opera, I was able to comprehend several expressions and felt that I had a vague gist on others. That is Turkish, so imagine Azerbaijani !
The audio recordings are very useful and they are like the icing on the cake. Honestly, I can hardly wait to run into an Azeri or a Turk and try what I have learned so far out in "real life", even at this early stage.
Add to all of that, that Dr. Oztopcu has not underestimated the fact that the Cyrillic script has been in use in Azerbaijan, and is still probably used by middle-aged people, and is still probably inscribed on many emblems and signs, just as plenty of books were written in it. He presents several of the lessons in it in a painless fashion, mirroring the Roman script, and asks of the student to try his/her hand at it.
I urge any diligent person with a passion for Azerbaijani to get this book and plunge into the language straight away.

Great textbook, December 27, 2004
This review is from: Elementary Azerbaijani (Turk Dilleri Arastirmalari Dizisi) (Azerbaijani Edition) (Paperback)
Really a good textbook, you can even use it as a teach-yourself book, though it doesn't have an answer key. Must be a fantastic tool in the classroom. Get the tapes, too.
