5.0 out of 5 stars A great beginning method book!, February 23, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Elementary Drum Method (Paperback)
I teach percussion privately, and I require all my beginning students to buy a copy of this book. It introduces the new percussionists to time signatures, rudiments, sticking methods, and playing auxiliary percussion instruments. It is a simple yet effective way to get started in percussion, and is a lot more interesting to play than _Stick Control_!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent intro. to reading rhythms, April 11, 2004
This review is from: Elementary Drum Method (Paperback)
I've taught percussion now for about 15 years, and this book teaches all the important rhythmic concepts within about 11 pages. It will definitely give a beginning student a sense of accomplishment, and will keep them interested, which is the most important thing! It also has a list of all 26 major rudiments and has plenty of useful exercises.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well written, May 5, 2006

Even though the graphics in the beginning leave something to be desired and could easily be updated, this is my favorite beginning drum book. For one thing, it contains the 'rudiments,' which I find an important part of the learning process. The rhythmic concepts and technical aspects (flams, drags, etc) are introduced in a logical order that the student can easily grasp.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good News From Roy Burns, October 2, 2011

This review is from: Elementary Drum Method (Paperback)
This is a great book by a great drummer who knows how to play the drums with an amazing musicality and technical abilty. This is a great gateway to being a drummer with technique and facility. Follow the advice and studies with diligence and hard work and as you progress the rewards of this content and study will flow back in abundance. Take time to study the photos of the correct hand positions, they are by a man who knows what he is displaying and instucting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Beginner Book for the aspiring drummer, September 17, 2010
This review is from: Elementary Drum Method (Paperback)
When I first learned the drumset, this is the book my teacher made me buy. It is written by Roy Burns (the head guy at Aquarian.) Lets face it, when you want to learn the drums, what could be more boring than learning on a practice pad a snare drum. You just have to tell yourself that to become a good drummer, you need to work and master the basics. This book covers the basics and will help you master them.

This book explains note values, it has all the rudiments, it teaches various time signatures, it covers syncopation, and it is fun to play. There are some books out there that are so dry and boring that they might actually make you not want to learn or might just confuse you. This book is the opposite. I like how it introduces each new step gradually. Everything seems to flow in this book from beginning to end.

Sometimes just for fun, I play through the whole book in under an hour just for practice.

If this is your first drum book, then just buy this, a pair of sticks, a practice pad, AND A METRONOME.

The drummer is the timekeeper and not only do you need to know how to play the stuff in this book, you need to know how to play it in time. So make sure you are playing with a metronome.

I highly recommend this book. While working on this book, make sure you play Ted Reed's Syncopation as well and halfway through, I think you should start on Realistic Rock by Carmine Appice. These three books helped me out and I think they will help you out.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for all drummers., February 24, 2009
I was first introduced to Elementary Drum Method by Roy Burns back in 1972. I was just starting to take drum lessons and my instructor advised me to get this book. He told me that it was a book that I'd never outgrow. He said that if I was a serious drummer then I would always be coming back to this book to practice rudamants and to keep my hands in shape. After 37 years of playing, I definetly see his point. This is a great book for all drummers. From the new student to the accomplished drummer, this is the book to use and never outgrow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginner drummers, September 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Elementary Drum Method (Paperback)
Very comprehensive, lots of good information for a novice drummer. Easy to follow and doesn't frustrate as quickly as a lot of beginner's drum books. This book provides a solid foundation, not just quick results that provide instant gratification. I highly recommend this book.

Excellent, used product. My nine year old son is playing the snare drum, and he needed this book. It arrived very quickly, and in excellent used condition. He is learning the drum method, and he really enjoys it. Thank you so much for your business, and I look forward to being a regular customer in the future. Sincerely, kathleen Gomula
