Book Description

March 31, 1999 0738201154 978-0738201153
This text continues to fill the need to communicate the present view of a solid as a system of interacting particles which, under suitable circumstances, behaves like a collection of nearly independent elementary excitations. In addition to introducing basic concepts, the author frequently refers to experimental data. Usually, both the basic theory and the applications discussed deal with the behavior of ‘simple’ metals, rather than the ‘complicated’ metals, such as the transition metals and the rare earths. Problems have been included for most of the chapters.

About the Author

David Pines is research professor of physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has made pioneering contributions to an understanding of many-body problems in condensed matter and nuclear physics, and to theoretical astrophysics. Editor of Perseus’ Frontiers in Physics series and former editor of American Physical Society’s Reviews of Modern Physics, Dr. Pines is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, a foreign member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Dr. Pines has received a number of awards, including the Eugene Feenberg Memorial Medal for Contributions to Many-Body Theory; the P.A.M. Dirac Silver Medal for the Advancement of Theoretical Physics; and the Friemann Prize in Condensed Matter Physics.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful and insightful read, May 18, 2000

This review is from: Elementary Excitations in Solids : Lectures on Phonons, Electrons, and Plasmons (Advanced Book Classics) (Paperback)
A gem of scientific literature, Elementary Excitations in Solids is organized, well thought out, and readable. Pines mixes experimental evidence with theoretical models in way that reminds the reader we are doing science not just math or experimental engineering. I recommend this book to any one who is learning condensed matter theory and wants to sit back some weekend afternoon, kick back, and enjoy a brisk but insightful presentation of phonons and plasmons. This book is truly a classic!

3.0 out of 5 stars Too much like a review article, September 25, 2010

This review is from: Elementary Excitations in Solids : Lectures on Phonons, Electrons, and Plasmons (Advanced Book Classics) (Paperback)
I first read this book as a graduate student and I found it somewhat helpful. But this book is really rather short and does not have much more in it than a review article. For those who do not have access to a research library and want to get an idea what plasmons are about, this might be a place to start. At the very least it is fair to say that David Pines was all about plasmons. It was said that at University of Illinois every course he taught ended up being about plasmons. This was true to such an extent that one of my friends who was a grad student studying high-energy physics at Illinois claimed (in jest!) that he chose his field over solid state physics because "I took the introductory solid state physics course from Professor Pines and discovered that solids state physics was only about plasmons--a topic which I did not find all that interesting". Well, if you do find plasmons to be an interesting topic, you would do better to buy Pines and NozieresThe Theory of Quatum Liquids, which is a much more complete treatment.
