Until Bibs Ekkel wrote his Mel Bay's Complete Bailalaika Book this was *the* method to have. It was for many years the only method available in English, originally translated in 1964 from the original Russian-language edition. This is the same edition as published then, still worth the small investment. I still have my original 1964 copy!

The introductory material is succinct and gives you everything you would need to know to get started. Although the pictures are quite "old", they are helpful in reviewing your hand positions. This book is full of music throughout and would be an excellent companion to the Ekkel book. If you're serious about learning the balalaika you owe it to yourself to buy both books for the price of what would normally be a single music lesson.

This book is the best buy for a beginner to play the balalaika.
The book from Bibs Ekel is to difficult for just a beginner.
All you need to learn is here.
I find these book the best for beginning to play the prim balalaika.
That,s the result of 5 stars i give it.

I have an original copy of this book, which is now badly damaged. I finally have someone who can give me formal lessons.

When I got my balalaika I ordered this book and I've really been amazed at how effective it is. I've tried similar books for other instruments before with limited success and I expected about the same results with this one. All I can say is that this one has been way, way better. Dorozhkin gives a well-structure yet very engaging approach to learning the balalaika, even explaining which strings to use and how to divide your practice time. Each lesson includes tablature but he also teaches you to read the music notation a little bit at a time. If you really follow his directions (which include practicing for 1.5 to 2.5 hours a day) you will be playing surprisingly beautiful music in no time. I am very pleased with this book, probably the best ten bucks I've ever spent.

If you know your Balalaika you may be able to understand and appreciate this book. I find it a lillte hard to fathom but
as I have as yet not spent too much time on it it may be me and not the book.
