Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Praise for June Chapin’s Approach

“[My] students love the sample lesson and unit plans.  I like to use the small work group exercises, as it actively involves them in discussing the chapter material.”

–Jacquelyn A. Lewis-Harris, University of Missouri—St.  Louis

Elementary Social Studies: A Practical Guide clearly and accessibly presents the essential content and methods for teaching social studies in the K—8 classroom.  This seventh edition keeps pace with today’s changing educational environment, reflecting recent trends in technology and exploring English language learners’ issues and the needs of diverse students. The text addresses the field’s increasing focus on teaching the disciplines of history, geography, economics, and civic education, while also giving thorough coverage of teaching to national (NCSS) and state standards. Using vignettes, classroom samples, and small group activities, this book prepares students to provide the best social studies instruction in their own classrooms.

New to This Edition

  • New full-chapter coverage of both geography and economics extends teacher knowledge in these critical areas.
  • Expanded diversity chapter addresses new realities in the elementary classroom, including obesity and learning issues of young boys.
  • New lesson plans showcase topics such as global education, geography, and economics and feature a greater emphasis on formative assessment.
  • Up-to-the-moment technology topics appear throughout the chapters, including new Web sites, Wikipedia, video games, and cyberbullying.

I liked this book, it gave many practical examples for teachers to use in the classroom. Social studies is generally a factual subject which can be very boring. This books helps to give you creative ideas for social studies content.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not very helpful., August 11, 1999
By A Customer
I am not too pleased with the usefulness of this text for teaching Social Studies Methods. The book gives many examples of teaching methods for social studies but the book lacks depth or how-to-ness. Okay for a general overview but not much substance. It lacks an overall philosophy or guiding theory. Students reading this text are left to sort through a variety of methods and come to their own decisions about what will work and not work in the classroom. I would rather have seen more of what the current research suggest about teaching than leaving all of the sence making to the reader.

This book is excellent for college students preparing to teach Elementary Ed in any school, public or private. I highly recommend it! It's a book you won't want to sell after you use it, because it's a great book to refer back to once you begin your teaching career.
