4.0 out of 5 stars Good series, could be better, July 26, 2008

This review is from: Elementary Statistics Using Excel, 3rd Edition (Book & CD-ROM) (Hardcover)
Triola contines a successful series in this third edition of statistics using Excel. Like the other two books, which differ only slightly from the newest edition, the author uses somewhat complex, sometimes confusing examples to illustrate basic statistical precepts.

My biggest complaint about this text is its tendency to get too advanced, too quickly. This text is excellent for a two-semester class.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent text, December 18, 2010
I don't understand all the negative criticism of this book. I have taught a course using this book about ten times and my students have not complained. I think Triola does an excellent job of using descriptive statistics in the beginning of the book to develop understanding for the inferential statistics later. His development of informal probability ("unusual events") lays the groundwork for the more formal significance tests that occur later. This book does not require calculus, so it is not as rigorous as upper-level mathstat books, but it is a bit more advanced than other elementary statistics books (like Basic Practice of Statistics). I have found it to be a good compromise.

This book makes you fight for every concept. It does not explain the reasons well and then gives you Excel problems with no conclusion. Do not take a course that uses this book to actually teach you or you will be in trouble!
