Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Musician Billy Childish, while something of a modern-day Renaissance man (he also writes and paints), will most likely be remembered for his recasting of garage rock, blues, and R&B as a post-punk form. While this is certainly an intuitive endeavor, Childish has handled it with aplomb, delivering music that can include raw emotion, political pith, sardonic observation, or just plain ol' invigorating garage stomp and howl. Childish is also obsessively prolific, with more than 100 albums and countless singles delivered at a breakneck pace. Elementary Headcoats serves as this project's swansong, as Childish disbanded the group in early 2000. Ironically, it's a wonderfully cohesive introduction to Childish's best band, Thee Headcoats. Selecting the songs from the band's huge output of rare and hard-to-find singles, Childish includes a nice mix of Headcoats material--from the funny "Headcoats On" and "The Earls of Suave" to the savage "I've Been Fu*king Your Daughters & Pissing on Your Lawns." Childish is a rare, uncompromising talent (who also happens to be extremely entertaining), and Elementary Headcoats is a more than worthy introduction. --S. Duda

Product Description

Swan song for the UK's snarling and most charming garage rock band. Fronted by Bill Childish (Thee Milkshakes, Thee Mighty Ceasers, The Pop Rivets). The definitive singles collection with 50 tracks (many of which were previously only available on limited edition 7' singles) crammed onto two CDs. 2000 release. Slimline double jewelcase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic garage rock!, November 24, 2000

"Elementary my dear Watson." Thee Headcoats were definitely one of the most influential garage bands of all time. However, Billy Childish and his English friends finally called it quits last year. Yet this CD encompases EVERY Headcoats 7" record ever released. What an incredible idea! Honestly I never thought any label would actually be able to do it, but here we have over 50 incredible songs by Thee Headcoats. All of the songs are taken from the original 7" recordings and put on to two extremely long CD's. A lot of these 7" records have been out of print for years, and there was no other place to get these original recordings until now. If you've never heard Thee Headcoats before, or if you've been a fan for years, this is an excellent CD that anyone familiar with the genre would appreciate. Bravo!

5.0 out of 5 stars Garage Rock Doesn't Get Much Better, December 1, 2005

Garage rock is truly an American enterprise. It was invented by bands such as the Kingsmen and the Seeds, expanded on by the MC5 and the Stooges, carried on through the 70's and 80's by the New York and L.A. punk scenes and garage stalwarts such as the Lyres, and was reborn in the form of bands such as the White Stripes and the Black Keys. That's not to say that other countries haven't put out fantastic garage bands. For example, Sweden has given us the Hives, Japan has given us Guitar Wolf, and the U.K. has given us, among others, the genius of Billy Childish. This two CD set is the best example of Childish's definitive rock that is pure garage freak beat with a purely English perspective. Childish's thick accent and "'ello guvna"-style lyrics give American fans a look into British garages, while the stomp and swagger of his music gives British fans a look into American garages. Thee Headcoats are the best project from a one of the essential artists of rock and roll history.

Although it's a good value for the money, 2 discs may be a little too much Kinks-styled crunch to bite off. I mean come on, their cover of "Louie Louie" is darn near definitive, but do we really need 3 versions of it? Folks, Thee Headcoats are one of the greatest garage bands ever, but it's not easy wading through the same 3 chords over and over for 50 songs. This is the type of band better heard in a brief 30 minute blast of energy. Headcoats fans will eat this album up, but for a newcomer I recommend Heaven To Murgatroyd It's Thee Headcoats Already on Sub Pop (which has their greatest song, "Mantrap").
