After completing my undergraduate work at the University of Oregon, I earned my doctorate in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I taught in the Mathematics Department and Computing Center at Michigan State University for four years before joining the faculty at the University of Oregon.

There, I had appointments in the Math Department and Computing Center, served six years as the first head of the Computer Science Department, and spent more than 20 years working in the Teacher Education component of the College of Education.

A few highlights of my professional career include founding the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), serving as its executive officer for 19 years, establishing ISTE's flagship publication, Learning and Leading with Technology, serving as the Editor in Chief for more than 25 years.

I was a major professor or co-major professor for more than 75 doctoral students. I have authored or coauthored more than 50 academic books and hundreds of articles. I have presented several hundred keynote speeches, talks, and workshops around the world.

More recently, I founded Information Age Education (IAE), a non-profit organization dedicated to improving teaching and learning by people of all ages and throughout the world. IAE currently provides free educational materials through its Wiki, the free IAE Newsletter published twice a month, and the IAE Blog. It is also selling some of its materials as Kindle books.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a nice little start to numerical analysis, June 6, 2001

This review is from: Elementary Theory and Application of Numerical Analysis (Paperback)
This is a nice little start to numerical analysis. None of the underlying real variable theory is explored in the detail. Basically, an undergraduate exposure to calculus and linear algebra is all that is required. The basic topics are covered such as integration, numerical differentiation, and interpolation. There are numerous worked out examples and the text is sprinkled with snippets of Fortran code. However, all of the material covered here is contained in Press' "Numerical Recipes in C" .

4.0 out of 5 stars A good text in numerical analysis, November 5, 2008

This review is from: Elementary Theory and Application of Numerical Analysis (Paperback)
I have a better but much more expensive text First Course in Numerical Analysis (International Series in Pure & Applied Mathematics)

that lacks the Fortran computer code in this book that can usually be translated to other computer languages with some effort.

The recursion form for -1+Sqrt[2] that I found on page 157 can be made into

a general form that will give the golden mean.

The only thing better about the higher priced book is that it has more in depth coverage of numerical analysis ( graduate level).

For me this book is a very welcome addition to my reference library that has taught me several things already.
