Book Description

August 1991 0132635348 978-0132635349 2nd
Designed for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate courses in kinetics and reactor theory, this text presents a treatment of chemical engineering kinetics and reaction design. It takes a structured approach to solving reaction engineering problems - seeking to encourage students to solve problems through reasoning rather than memorization. New features in this second edition are homework problems using real reactions and real data, which are graded in difficulty, and material on emerging technologies in chemical engineering, including micro-electronics (CVD, etching and boat reactors), biotechnology (microbial growth kinetics and chemostat design) and polymerization kinetics. The overall aim is to enable students to solve reaction engineering problems using software packages.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Widely adopted the world over, this text discusses solving reaction engineering problems through logic rather than memorization and the use of algorithms.

From the Back Cover

Applied Algorithms + Software Packages = Advanced Tools for Solving Complex Problems

The newest digital techniques, built on the sound foundations of the classic, best-selling text.

With a combination of user-friendly software and classic algorithms, students learn to solve problems through reasoning rather than memorization.

Thorough coverage of the fundamentals of chemical reaction engineering forms the backbone of this trusted text, presented in a framework that helps develop critical-thinking skills and practical problem-solving. All the classical elements are covered. Elements of Chemical Reaction Engineering, Third Edition, builds a strong understanding of chemical reaction engineering principles and shows how they can be applied to numerous reactions in a variety of applications.

The structured approach helps develop skills in critical thinking, creative thinking, and problem-solving, by employing open-ended questions and stressing the Socratic method.

To enhance the transfer of skills to real-life settings, three styles of problems are included for each subject:

  • Straightforward problems that reinforce the material
  • Problems that encourage students to explore the issues and look for optimum solutions
  • Open-ended problems that encourage students to practice creative problem-solving skills
Elements of Chemical Reaction Engineering, Third Edition remains a leader as the only undergraduate-level book to focus on computer-based solutions to chemical reaction problems. About the CD-ROM

The enclosed CD offers numerous enrichment opportunities for both students and instructors, including:

  • Learning Resources: lecture notes, web modules, and problem-solving heuristics
  • Living Example Problems: POLYMATH software that allows students to explore the examples and ask "what-if" questions
  • Professional Reference Shelf: detailed derivations, equations, general engineering materials, and specialty reactors and reaction systems
  • Additional Study Materials: extra homework problems, course syllabi, guides to popular software packages

Throughout the text, margin icons link concepts and procedures to the material on the CD for fully integrated learning and reference.

This books presents a very simplified and a unified approach to the Chemical Reactor Design and Reaction Engineering. The concepts are explained with such simple logic that it stimulates thinking of further application in the field. The topic on RTD is perfectly described not found in any other text. Made my life a lot easier in the Graduate school. A must for all chemical engineers.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book presents complicated material in an insightful way, April 10, 1999

This book is positively excellent; it makes the subject matter both interesting and easy to learn. With the texts for so many of my classes being mediocre at best, it's nice to run across a text that reflects a tremendous amount of thought and presents complicated subect matter in an uncomplicated way. In addition, I give the book props for the thought-provoking examples and problems. They make problem sets more interesting and worthwhile.

This book is so good, if you're taking a reactor design class, and it's not the required text...GET IT. It'll make your life a lot easier. I got it for an undergrad class and used it as a necessary reference in a graduate class.
