100% Brutal Oppressive Death Metal, January 11, 2002
This review is from: Elements of Corrosion (Audio CD)
This is an album that many death metal fans should look into. I already heard of this band before because I saw their Europeon Oppression/As The Blood Flows CD at a Camelot Music store only a year before finding this CD. I still regret not buying it. So anyway, when I first saw this CD at a listening booth at Best Buy, I jumped at the change to listen to it and being a fan of brutal death metal and bands like Malevolent Creation, Deicide and Cannibal Corpse, I was very impressed as well as pumped up. So I bought it some days later and I listened to all of it. My only complaint is that it was a little too short but despite that, the album totally ripped.
Now for my review. This is accually the band's last album before calling it quits. For those who don't know, 3 of the band members are accually Tim King, Adam Zadel and Tom Schofield who are now in a rock band called Soil. I'm sure that some of you have hear of them since they're huge now. Anyway, when the band called it quits, Tim, Tom and Adam when into Soil which also features Shaun from Broken Hope. While the 3 guys were in Oppressor, as a death metal band, they put out some really ungue yet heavy, brutal death metal. This is just one of the albums that they put out and it's a really awesome one indeed. I mean this is 100% professional, classy, kicking, heavy, all-out, aggressive, intense, powerful, well produced, talented, brutal death metal the way it should be. This is one of the reasons why I listen to death metal. The vocals are brutal and sound very much like those on Morbid Angel's Blessed Are The Sick and Covenent, the bass pounds like a hammer, the drums rip and the guitars are awesome. The musicianship, creativity and the music itself is incredable. Some of my favorite songs here are Kingdom Of The Dead, Upon The Uncreation, I Depise, Vulgur Illusions and the short intrimental outro, Lost In Sorrow. If you love Malevolent Creation, Morbid Angel, Nile, Cannibal Corpse, Deicide and Divine Empre, than pick this one up. You'll be impressed. Also, check their other albums like Agony and Solstice Of Oppression. Get Agony first and than Solstice Of Oppression which is more for the underground fan.

Solid death metal, May 4, 2001
By A Customer
"Elements of Corrosion" is a solid offering of death metal. The Oppressor style of death metal falls in-between the technicality of Morbid Angel and the Cannibal Corpse grind - and it works. Though they are not breaking any new ground, the songs are well written and they play with tremendous conviction. My biggest complaint is the production - the overall sound seems kind of muddled. Bands like Cryptopsy, Nile, or even Morbid Angel, all have albums with great production values. Tech death, at least for me, only works when the sound is sharp and clear - allowing the listener to hear every detail. Because Oppressor flirts with tech death, the production hurts their cause a tad.
Most of the riffs on this album range in the mid-tempo with the double bass drums blasting away in the background. Their Morbid Angel leanings come from the "groove" of their riffs and melody lines. Both Adam Zadel and Jim Stopper are solid guitarists and their solos are very enjoyable. Vocals are your typical death vox - Tim King kind of sounds like Dave Vincent(ex-lead singer of Morbid Angel).
To be honest, I bought this album when I was waiting for the A-class bands to come out with new material. Was I disappointed? No. Even though Oppressor kind of sounds like a poor man's Morbid Angel (mainly because of the poor production I mentioned before), a poor man's Morbid Angel is better than all the crap that's considered popular today. After listening to EOC a bunch of times, my gut reaction was with the right producer and label to back them up, this band would have reached the A list of death metal bands. Rumor has it they broke up a couple of years ago - damn shame. Best track: opener "Corrosion" and the Morbid Angel sounding "In Malice I Breathe". Buy this if you're a metal junky and you're looking for something new to listen to!
