Book Description

May 1998 380556628X 978-3805566285 1
Trace elements are involved in almost every biochemical process in body cells, and inadequacy or unbalance of trace element supply consequently affects a number of physiological functions. Improved and developed analytical techniques have contributed to an increased understanding of the role trace elements for health and disease. This book presents an overview of knowledge concerning their significance in a number of conditions. The specific problems of evaluating trace element intakes and status are highlighted, present intakes of trace elements in Europe are reviewed and the potential consequences of inadequate supply of trace elements in general and more specifically of iron and iodine are described. The book goes on to examine results of supplementation trials in periods of rapid growth - ie infants and pregnancy - as well as experimental animal studies on growth regulation. Finally, trace elements and their relationship with chronic disease is studied, as trace elements are known to play important roles in the development of cardiovascular disease, cancer and osteoporosis.
