About the Author

Jim Candler is currently vice President of Personnel Systems and Support at Federal Express where he has worked for the last 18 years. In that time he has been responsible for the design, development, and maintenance of the company's on-line, real-time human resource information system called PRISM. PRISM has resulted in all employees being able to access personal, benefit, and similar HR information at the stroke of a key. He has also developed a corporate scanning and workflow system which has removed millions of pieces of paper from offices across the company for a "paperless '98." Most recently he has led the development of Personnel.Link, the FedEx Personnel Division corporate Intranet. Candler has presented across the nation and written frequently for IHRIM.link: A Publication of the Association of Human Resource System Professionals where he has also served as editor.

Eric Brown founded his consulting firm, Communication Associates, in 1980. His clients include major Fortune 500 companies who use his presentation design, communication training, writing services, and web expertise in many contexts. He is author of Throw Away Your Pencil: writing with a Word Processor (Prentice-Hall), of The FedEx Personnel Division Intranet Style Book, is a Houghton Mifflin finalist, a writer for Hearst publications, and many professional journals. He is also originator of www.corporate-ave.com.

4.0 out of 5 stars sound advice, great examples, January 9, 2000
This review is from: The Elements of Intranet Style (Paperback)
For non-tech specialists, this little book is an appropriate follower to Strank and White. It certainly helped our team stop arguing about technology and focus on what our site was supposed to do, plus it really helped us decide on how it should look and how people could move around to find what they wanted to find and that sort of thing. The Predictible Problems section and the User Forward ideas saved me at least a couple of sleepless nites. Thanks for making the book available. Only the fact that I wanted still more data from the writers stopped me from giving the 5 stars that the book probably deserves.

5.0 out of 5 stars A hard to please engineer, January 6, 2000

This review is from: The Elements of Intranet Style (Paperback)
Excellent! Finally a useful (and enjoyable) text on intranet style that is clear and packed with required information on making a killer intranet from scratch. In my field, I deal with professionals that have all sorts of cyber experience, and using The Elements of Intranet Style I can speak intranet to the expert as well as the novice. Big pluses include the "Must know's and Must no's" section that warns of copyright pitfalls and security issues headaches. Overall this book is an excellent, low cost bible dedicated to the rapidly growing intranet. A must!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great guide reference guide, worthy of multiple readings, September 15, 1999

This review is from: The Elements of Intranet Style (Paperback)
Thanks to this book, I finally appreciate some of the differences between the Internet and an intranet in terms of corporate communications policies, screen design, infrastructure, project management and security requirements. As a layman, the technical glossary has been helpful to me in my current job and projects and I refer to it several times a week. Good insight on the people side (politics, etc.) of corporate intranet projects. My thanks to the authors.
