Editorial Reviews

Elements of Light is a logical continuation of Pantha Du Prince's previous work, but the music does in no way constitute a walk down beaten paths. The result of this unusual project is an original piece, crafted in the intersection between electronic elements and classical composition. While maintaining a strict focus on the resonating sound of bells and percussion, Elements of Light offers a deep and broad range of sounds, all driven by a swelling and detumescing bass drum.

I'd never heard of the artist known as Pantha du Prince, until my wife heard a preview of his album on NPR. Once I visited the stream of this album on the NPR website, I was hooked. The classically-constructed five-movement piece starts quietly with the handbell choir The Bell Laboratory ("Wave"), then gradualy flows into du Prince's carillon playing, and slowly the electronic effects begin to creep in. About halfway through the second track, "Particle", du Prince turns the groove on, and things really start to pulse along. The first three tracks are the most impressive and enjoyable, but by the time we get to the longest track, "Spectral Split", the pace and development are more leisurely. Eventually, the momentum builds again, then unwinds into the final track, with The Bell Laboratory providing a beautiful conclusion. There's a successful blend of the organic/acoustic and the electronic here, and at times it's very reminiscent of the opening sections of Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells". I found that it makes for great driving music, though I'm no expert on how "danceable" it is. The upshot is, this is an unusual and very satisifying album for anyone who likes good electronica, bells, or any well-done contemporary instrumental music.

I play handbells, so I am particularly impressed with the sounds and rhythms on this album. It's amazing. I wish it were longer.

I first heard about Pantha du Prince when his album, "Black Noise" was reviewed on NPR. I was intrigued. I really love minimalist techno, and his use of bells and dance rhythms was a combination impossible for me to resist. So, I was very pleased to hear he was making this EP.

I was not disappointed. Hendrik Weber (aka Pantha du Prince) takes his love of bells to the next level in this album, employing an actual carillon, among other interesting things. The various bells and chimes are played straight, but he adds some marvelous sonic bending effects to them, giving them an unearthly sound that just adds to their beauty. Add the danceable bass and beats to the mix, and you have something that is incredibly enjoyable on many levels.

This got a good review in the local paper. Pantha Du Prince is a studio wizard/dj who has a very well recorded piece featuring bells, gongs, and some electronica. It is melodic, not highly rhythymic but effective and chill. Like this. There is some variation, so the pieces are not highly repetitive or drone Will give it a repeat listen..
