Book Description

September 28, 1998 0126016852 978-0126016857 2
Tremendous developments in the field of polymer science, its growing importance, and an increase in the number of polymer science courses in both physics and chemistry departments have led to the revision of the First Edition. This new edition addresses subjects as spectroscopy (NMR), dynamic light scattering, and other modern techniques unknown before the publication of the First Edition. The Second Edition focuses on both theory (physics and chemistry) and engineering applications which make it useful for chemistry, physics, and chemical engineering departments.

Key Features
* Focuses on applications of polymer chemistry, engineering and technology
* Explains terminology, applications and versatility of synthetic polymers
* Connects polymerization chemistry with engineering applications
* Leads reader from basic concepts to technological applications
* Highlights the vastly valuable resource of polymer technology
* Uses quanitative examples and problems to fully develop concepts
* Contains practical lead-ins to emulsion polymerization, viscoelasticity and polymer rheology

Review

"The textbook has been a solid teaching text for introductory polymer science and engineering courses....It remains a very good textbook for many introductory concepts and is thought out and developed well for teaching purposes."
--Eli Pearce, Polytechnicnic University, Brooklyn, NY, POLYMER NEWS, Vol. 24, No. 10, 1999.

From the Back Cover

Polymeric materials are finding an ever-increasing number of new industrial applications. The volume of polymers used as plastics, rubbers, coatings, fibers and related products exceeds the volume of metals in the industrialized world. The day-to-day work of technically trained people in this industry is more likely to require a grasp of polymer science or engineering than of any other sub-discipline. The Elements of Polymer Science and Engineering, 2nd Edition is a hands-on guide for such readers, as well as serving as the text for a two- or three-semester course in polymer science and engineering. The material covered begins with basic concepts and proceeds through to current industrial practice.

The Elements of Polymer Science and Engineering, 2nd Edition strongly emphasizes the practical applications of polymer science. Dr. Rudin focuses his vast expertise in both the chemistry and physics aspects of today's polymer science and engineering, providing professionals and students with an exceptional and thorough navigational tool.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not such a great textbook., December 9, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Elements of Polymer Science and Engineering: Elements of Polymer Science & Engineering, Second Edition: An Introductory Text and Reference for Engineers and Chemists (Hardcover)
I used this book as a textbook in a class. I feel that it is not really that strong of a book for most introductory polymer courses. I feel that either Alcock's book for a course stressing systhesis and characterization or Heimetz's book for courses stressing polymer physics are better. Of all the polymer books on my shelf, it is probably the least useful to me now. It is at the right level for begining students, but there are better choices for beginners out there.

This review is from: The Elements of Polymer Science and Engineering: Elements of Polymer Science & Engineering, Second Edition: An Introductory Text and Reference for Engineers and Chemists (Hardcover)
All those who want to make a solid base in this subject must study this book. This book has made each and evry concept of polymer science simple and easy to understand. The difficulties that students encounter in Polymer weight measurements have been dealt with beutifully and one can easily follow it.The concepts of isomerization and copolymers are also explained clearly. In all I can say that this book is worth reading otherwise you may miss something important in Polymer Science Engineering.
