Worked just fine after a very easy hookup.
Hi tech
I waited a few months before submitting a review to get a good feel for the product and I can honestly say that this is a good buy.

Be sure to check the prices of the different sizes because of the time of writing this review the 1 TB hard drive was only five dollars more than the 500 GB version. Doubling your space for only five dollars is a no-brainer. As always I recommend getting the largest hard drive you can afford because at some point you want/need more space.

This is an "portable" hard drive meaning all it needs is a USB plug into your computer to transfer the data and get power from. That means you don't have to plug in an AC adapter to your wall socket. I prefer these hard drives over the kind that require an AC adapter every time. This will also work with USB 2.0 adapters the speeds for 2.0 transfers are still fast enough for most users at about a gigabyte of data every 30 to 40 seconds. At the time of writing this review to terabyte drives or the highest capacity could find for a portable hard drive. If you want to get a 3 or 4TB hard drive those are the kind that require a wall AC adapter.

This hard drive is Mac compatible just follow the steps below to format the hard drive for your Mac. If you're a Mac user setting up or erasing this drive up with your computer is super easy follow these steps.

1. Plug in the the drive
2. Open up disk utility found in your applications folder inside the utilities folder
3. Next select the newly plugged in a drive and on the right-hand side you should see partition click on that.
4. Then inside that screen on the partition layout drop-down choose how many partitions you'd like to set up. I generally go with one partition and just use folders to organize my files.
5. Then on the right-hand side you can name the partitions and select the format.

I ordered this hard drive to start a digital collection of Wii U games and it works well for that purpose. The drive wasn't even recognized with the included USB cable and required a Y-cable in order to be formatted and used. It has a tendency to go to sleep when not in use for a few minutes, as when using Netflix or Wii mode, but this isn't a problem during gameplay, where the drive is actively read and written to.

I measured the read speed on PC at about 80mb/s (sequential) when using USB 3.0. Using the same USB 2.0 Y-cable connection Wii U uses, the speed dropped to 34mb/s for a sequential read and 23mb/s for a random read, both of which are faster than the 22.5mb/s speed of Wii U discs.

In-game, I saw an average reduction in loading times of 6 seconds for Mariokart 8 tracks and 1-2 seconds for Pikmin 3 trials (there was no change in the initial game boot time in either case). In general, the drive is fast and performs better than using a disc, but it does read very slowly at system startup, which reduces the usefulness of Wii U's "quick start" feature. It's also not as fast as the Wii U's internal flash memory, which loaded Bit Trip Runner 2 and Nano Assault Neo levels about 3-4 seconds faster (but that's to be expected from a SSD).

It's a shame that the full USB 3.0 speed capabilities of HDDs can't be utilized on Wii U, but this drive still loads faster than an optical disc and works reliably. Aside from the sluggish performance at boot-up, I'm very happy with this drive.

It is very small in size and very quiet. This has far exceeded my expectations. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to use it with the Wii U which is what I have it for

I had previously purchased a WD Passport Ultra, which has some backup programs and associated cloud storage. That one was great for backing up a laptop. The Elements, however, is a fantastic portable drive for backing up media, like pictures, movies, and songs. Plug it in (USB 3.0 or 2.0) to a Windows computer and it is ready to go! I simply deleted the files/folders that came on it by default, and now I have, essentially, a big 1 TB flash disk.

If you need PC backup software, look for the Passport Ultra. But if you just need some media storage, the Elements is a fantastic solution.

This is a very nice little compact storage device. Inexpensive and convenient for sharing large files with friends and family by mail. Quickly formats to FAT32 for use on both PC and iMac.

This is a great priced drive and seems to operate very smoothly with my Windows 7 machine. The only real problem I have is the fact that it goes to sleep after like 6 minutes of inactivity and takes around 30 seconds to "wake up". Windows Explorer just searches and searches while the drive comes back on line. Not an issue if you use it continuously though. Western Digital made a tool to shut off this sleep "feature" but it doesn't work for this model.

This item arrived faster than greased lightening. I own an engineering services company and have 9 of these in operation. Just plug them in and click and drag. Never had a problem with any of them.

It's small, pretty quick and affordable. You get a lot of storage for the price and WD hard drives have always been reliable to me. I would highly recommend.
