Elements Of EBM,
By
This review is from: Elements of Silence (Audio CD)
With past comparisons to VNV Nation, Norway EBM act PRIDE AND FALL seem to have come into their own with "Elements of Silence." With this 2nd album, P&F seems to find a more polished sound of their own. The album resonates with EBM dance friendly beats. The first single "Border" reminds listeners of fellow Scandanavian band Covenant (whose album "Skyshaper" is out March 7) pulsing with rich electronic beats and the feeling of one lost love. The dark theme of loss, rememberance, and the finality of death in a relationship resonates through the lyrics. The tracks "Retrospect", "Elements Of Silence", and "Pathogen" share a deep emotive pain which illuminates the darkness of loss. If you love EBM and Electronic music this album will sooth your needs. VNV Nation, Covenant, and Icon of Coil fans will be particularly pleased.

Before reading this review, I have to say that I AM a fan of Pride and Fall and think the comparisons to VnV Nation are really unjust. If you simply slide their albums into a disc player and skip through their tracks, some of the songs have a similar style. Still, EBM bands have a problem in that they use a lot of the same insturments, that some of the same vocal styles are used, and that Pride and Fall are under the same roof as VnV Nation. I list this because I was almost swayed by negative reviews because of this on their first album, finding myself put off by the thought of having something that was a more tribute than triumph. After buying it I really didn't see what people were saying; you can see what you think about that by checking out their samples on Metropolis-Records and seeing what you think.
A product of Norway, I was quite surprised by the first album they produced. Their lead singer, Sivge, has a great voice and the rest of the band has a sound that fits in both at home and on the dancefloor. The second album surpassed that, however, and more than doubled my listening time when it came to the record. While a lot of bands on the new electronic front are into gimmicks to get noticed, Pride and Fall goes about doing "their thing" the good old fashion way; they put together a tapestry of sound and invite the listener in, and this tapestry is then modified by pinning a message inside the sound just to give people something unique. I found myself drawn to six of their songs right off the bat, and the rest of the disc grew on me as I walked it around for a while. I look at a lot of EBM as "soundtracks to motion," giving me walking music when I'm on the go. Elements of Silence is good for that, with beats that cover the field and messages that are more than shiny notes in an audio bottle. As I said at the beginning, listen to the clips from Metropolis-Records and judge what you like for yourself. While Pride and Fall, their debut album is a great start and then this is a great follow-up. I like the new brand of EBM, dropping some of the Voxing and letting emotions come through. If you like Metropolis acts, then this is a good pick to obtain. Also, for fans of the band, there is a new release coming in Sept. 2007.
