Ednas goldfish grows a bit,
By Laxdfence2@aol.com (Rockville Centre , New YOrk) - See all my reviews

I have been a fan of ednas goldfish since i got a demo version of Veronica sawyer on The Long Island Ska COmp 2. Their first album, "Before you knew better" was a great album, And i couldnt wait for The elements of Transition came out. When i popped it in, i found one main difference. It seems that in the years since "Before you knew better" Endas goldfish has grown musically, The tones slowed down, the brass has improved greatly, Brian diaz (the singer) has grown vocally, Definatly a 5 star worthy album

Let me start by saying that I have the utmost respect for both Edna's Goldfish and Moon Ska Records. For 17+ years, Moon has been putting out top-quality ska releases and, at the same time, trying to market ska without tarnishing it with corporate homogenization. Also, they have spent countless hours and dollars promoting lesser-known bands, which brings me to Edna's Goldfish. Their first release, "Before You Knew Better", blew my pork-pie off. It was fresh, catchy, and (most importantly) energized. I had the opportunity to catch their live performance and was even more impressed. Having said that, I was as happy as a little girl when I first picked up "Elements of Transition". I popped it into my CD player, and--- automatic buzz-kill. The songs were, for lack of better words, lame. The main aspect I noticed was lacking was ENERGY. I didn't want to believe it at first-- "Maybe I bought the wrong CD" and "This is some sort of weird joke" were my reactions. This was seriously the first time I actually had trouble sitting through an entire "ska" album. I almost feel guilty about writing this, having had a good rapport with the fine people at Moon for several years, as well as being familiar with their outstanding record of quality. I also realize that bands such as Edna's Goldfish are trying to stretch the boundaries and bring new flavors to the ska pallate, and I respect that. However, I feel (read: hope) that this album was one little experimental mishap, and it will never happen again. If you are looking for something fresh and new from Moon, I suggest The Adjusters or The Skoidats. If you do decide to pick up "Elements of Transition", please do not let it act as a barometor to measure against the other Moon Skatalog favourites.

ok so its not catchy mad caddies style ska punk but if you listen and open up your mind you'll realise its a LOT better. Its so much more mature than their first album (which is also incredible) and has a more emo feel to it.

Edna's Goldfish "Elements of Transition" is a great album. With fast and catchy songs like "Veronica Sawyer" and "Everyone I Know is From Lindhurst", Edna's goldfish is destined for success. They put together an enjoyable and awesome piece of work that automatically puts you in a good mood.

Not a great comeback.,

This album was not a great follow up to their first album. It sounds classical rather than good ska, like their first cd. It isn't very catchy, but some of the songs are alright.

What can I say about Edna's? One of the more pop oriented ska bands of the time. As for the album, just as I remember it. I love the vocals. I recommend this for anyone. I saw them play a couple times when I was younger and now that you cant, buy this.

I am completely in love with Edna's Goldfish. Their CD is awesom and has some of the best ska tracks I've heard in a long time. The band was originally from Long Island. Edna's Goldfish's best songs: Eventually Anyway I'm Your Destiny Finally a CD that will bring a new found fame and respect for the tri-state area ska/punk scene. Also checkout What's Your Problem Brian? [a local ska band from my area][Aftermath: The band broke up (rip) and a member went on to form another band called the Reunion Show]

This cd is great. I enjoyed almost everything about from the horns to the vocals. It is sad that great bands like this break up before they get the recognition they deserve. Fans of awsome ska bands such as Reel Big Fish and Jeffries Fan Club would lovw this album.
