Book Description

Seafarer Books September 1, 2001
'This book is intended to be a practical and concise presentation of some of the operations involved in designing yachts of all types. Cumbersome and impractical methods which are so often found in more pretentious works on naval architecture have been avoided. Those presented have been in everyday use by the author. The thirty-footer design used for purposes of illustration is obsolete in type, having been designed many years ago, but serves the purpose of illustrating the various operations involved in designing a yacht.' Thus wrote Norman L. Skene in his preface to the fifth edition of Elements of Yacht Design.
First published in 1904, Skene's is one of the most famous yacht design books ever written. He performed several revisions, the last of which appeared in 1938 and is now reprinted here, preserved in its original form. The book was subsequently revised further by Francis S. Kinney, whose editions have long since gone out of print. While experts are divided on the relative merits of the various editions, there is strong demand for Skene's original work. With this release, that demand is met; Skene's unaltered text is again available to the many boatbuilders, aspiring naval architects, and sailors for whom it is a much-needed reference.'

Editorial Reviews

Review

A little gem, first published in 1904 which, in these days of standard hulls, fills a much felt gap in our knowledge. We know so little about hull lines that it is really valuable to have at hand what is a standard work of reference. There are bits that no longer apply but the principles of hull design and what keeps a yacht going in heavy weather and light are intensely satisfying the more so as we no longer for the most part commission an architect to design a yacht and watch its construction.

"An absorbing and classic work, well worth the effort to assimilate." --Cruising, Summer 2002

Skene runs through many of the formulae used in yacht design, and their underlying principles. For the non-mathematician, it makes one realize how far off the mark most of our boats are. Buy this book and put your own boat s measurements into the formula. You will wonder how ever she stayed upright or went to windward.

Whilst being a useful technical reference book on classic yacht design, this book is essential reading for those who want to make a meaningful contribution to the rig debate. --Royal Naval Sailing Association Journal, Autumn 2002

5.0 out of 5 stars Non-current edition, June 19, 2002
By
Daniel Payne (Denver, CO, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Elements of Yacht Design (Seafarer Books) (Paperback)
Word of warning, although this book is probably excellent as well in the elements of yacht design, the most current edition is the 8th edition, not the reprinted 6th edition. Please note that the 8th edition contains more modern construction methods and materials. Unfortunately the 8th edition is out of print so it is kind of difficult to find. (Published in 1973 and later) Good luck and good designing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic.., November 10, 2003
By
Tyson Zwicker (Fort McMurray, Alberta Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Elements of Yacht Design (Seafarer Books) (Paperback)
This is the classic book on yacht design. The "Manual of Calculations" at the back of the book is worth the cost of the entire book. More detailed/scientific than most other books on the topic of Yacht Design. Tends to focus a bit to much on rules-based-sail racing (from my persepctive) but otherwise excellent- a must have if you are planning to design anything that floats!

5.0 out of 5 stars Yacht Hydrodynamics 101, February 27, 2006
This review is from: Elements of Yacht Design (Seafarer Books) (Paperback)
A proven book on Yacht Hydrodynamics, often out of Print but relatively recently available again. Note that emphasis is on Design, which in this case refers to the particulars of Hydrodynamics of Yachts and not as some might assume to mechanical engineering or even interior decorating.

THERE is a wonderful fascination about yacht designing because of the opportunity generally afforded the designer for experiment toward improvement of type, and for the expression of his genius practically unhampered by the many considerations which closely restrict the efforts of the designer of commercial vessels. Read the first page
