A little bit of everything,

This review is from: Elenco ECK10 Electronic Component Kit (Misc.)
This is a pretty nice selection of components. You get a little bit of everything and it even comes with a little booklet explaining the background of each component and how they work. It's geared towards kids, and kind of set up like a science lab. The booklet has ideas for experiments, but there's really not enough in the kit to do much by itself. But if you already have a breadboard and a couple of batteries you could have a lot of fun with the components in this kit.

Not very useful,

This review is from: Elenco ECK10 Electronic Component Kit (Misc.)
I've bought a number of Elenco products, and this is the first one that doesn't provide much real value in terms of fun or education. The point of the kit is to teach you about electronic components, and the pamphlet that comes with the kit is reasonably well written, but definitely geared more towards a middle-school aged audience. I do think the pamphlet is worthwhile, and it is available as a download from Elenco if you search on the model number of the kit (ECK-10). Unfortunately, other than the pamphlet there isn't much value at all to the kit.
As mentioned in the technical description of the product, the pictured components are not necessarily the ones you receive. (You don't get any sort of a transformer at all, for example.) You do get a smattering of the other components pictured, but the only reason they are included in the kit is for the parts-identification quizzes in the pamphlet. In other words, you identify the parts they include in the kit, but nothing in the kit tells you how to use them, and you're definitley not going to use them by themselves to make anything useful or interesting. For example, the IC included with the kit I bought is an API8108A, a 10 second instant voice rom. It's not a very useful general purpose component, unlike say maybe a 555 timer. Other random parts thrown in the grab bag are a plastic strain relief for a power cord and a circuit board for who knows what. Basically the kit seems like an excuse for Elenco to sell off a bunch of random parts.
