You really need an outside antenna. Take some small wire 22 or 24 awg the longer the better and make a round loop. Hang it around the outside of a window and connect it to the antenna spring. This should work better than the bar antenna.
They could explain how the radio works. The book that comes with it does not really tell you much more than how to put it together. It would be better if they had a layman explanation of how and why the radio works and a simple overview of radios in general.
This kit which is a much more complex design was much easier to assemble. The only area that is not clear is that it is supposed to receive 2 SW bands and the instructions don't tell you if you can tune both (I don't see how with no selector switch) or if you have to move jumpers to change bands. From what I see you have to move one jumper to change bands. Otherwise this is a pretty good kit.
Again don't expect a fully functional Short Wave receiver. That's not what this is. It's a learning and experimenting kit.
Also it is not the kit shown, which is an AM radio kit and it is not made by Elenco. It is made by Maxitronix. So MIcro-Tools (the seller) really needs to get their act together on this item description.
Bottom line - there is a little building of the radio (there is the circuit you don't build; check the upper right part of the board) but no info on what you just built.
Why would I buy this kit? To get a repairable short wave radio with few parts to go wrong. Pair this up with a Radio Shack Learning Lab (amplifier) to get sound from a speaker.
Young people will need help with this kit. But it is a good kit and it works
great if built per the instructions.

This radio is a piece of crap. First all the parts weren't there so I had to call the manufacturer and have them ship the missing parts to me. Read morePublished 9 months ago by Gary Jones
