Awesome Photographs,
By
This review is from: Elephant (Hardcover)
South African photographer Steve Bloom says that he first began his interest in elephants as a child. He has apparently never slacked in his interest. Down through the years he has photographed elephants in Africa and in India. Now he brings this collection of pictures of individuals, of herds, pictures taken while sharing a pond with an elephant, or from an airplane circling above. Here are pictures of herds of females and family groups, pictures of single bulls. Perhaps the most outstanding photographs are those of elephants swimming. Elephants swim almost completely underwater with, once in a while he lifts his trunk like a snorkle on a World War II submarine.
Beyond the beautiful there is also happiness, joy, clumbsy youngsters, solitary walks through the forest -- fantastic photos.

Amazing & unique,

Saw his work this summer on the streets of Copenhagen and having been on more than a dozen safariis was blown away by his patience and eye for just the right photo. Images are unexpected and gorgeous. He really captures these animals in a unique way that I have never seen before. Editorial is pedantic and weak.

Deep, Fun, And Exotic!!!,

I think that this book reveals both the deep and fun side of elephants. The picture of an elephant swimming shows off the grace and beauty. By using pictures of elephants in human cerimonies, Steve Bloom portrays an elephants life in a very beautiful way! :-)

Wow. I've seen a lot Elephant photographs. I have pretty high standards since I've had the opportunity to photograph wild Elephants in East Africa and Asia ([...]). Fortunately, Bloom surpasses any expectations I had with Elephant. The pictures portray Elephants in completely new and original ways. I felt like even though I had taken my own pictures, it was worth the price to see Bloom's art. Indeed, the picture on the cover of this book is probably my least favorite (and it's pretty good).
I love Bloom's use of different angles and compositions. Several of his pictures feature Elephant trunks and show them from a new perspective. There are also some pictures of Elephants taken from underwater, which is something you almost never see. The pictures on pp. 18-19 and 25 have incredible lighting and texture - almost as if they were mythical images. It's definitely worth your time using the book browse feature on Amazon.com to sample the pictures in the book. For those of you deciding between the two, I like this book better than Karl Ammann's Elephant Reflections. Steve Bloom's photos are more original and colorful. For those of you who love Elephants, I'd also highly recommend reading Cynthia Moss' Elephant Memories: Thirteen Years in the Life of an Elephant Family and watching the David Attenborough documentary Echo and Other Elephants.

Elephant,

This is a magnificent book filled with rich photography. From the ground looking up you can see the majesty of the elephant. The group photos show
their need and love for one another. My daughter is an artist. When she was very young, she saw her first elephant in the zoo. Her father asked her what she thought. "He makes me feel very deep," she said. I am a sculptor and toy designer who wanted good photos for my work. This book will fill your eye and touch your heart.

A Book for Elephant Lovers,
By

With great sensitivity, compassion, passion, and courage, Steve Bloom has created a masterpiece of words and images about elephants and their habitats and caretakers. His aesthetic, poetic insight helps erase any boundaries between "us" and "them." So it is a look inward as well as outward. Bravo, Steve Bloom

Gorgeous, beautiful photography. It catches the essence of these magnificent creatures. We lived in East Africa for many years and went on safari as often as possible. This book is a "keeper" to pass on to our children and grandchildren.
