Essential History of Expermental/Difficult Music in the UK,
By
This review is from: Elephant Table Album (Audio CD)
Originally compiled by Dave Henderson and released in 1983 as a 2-LP set, the CD version was released in 1989 as a single disc. As such, it is shorter than its vinyl counterpart. Missing are "Melena Jesenska" by Muslimgauze, Paul Kelday's "Birth of Planetesimals (extract)," "New Humanity Switchboard (extract)" by New 7th Music and "Alleycat" by Was Be Echo. However, what remains is an excellent testament to the "difficult" experimental music coming out of the UK at the time. Ranging from danceable to gloom-gothic to stress-inducing, the tracks on this CD have weathered quite well, thank you very much. Highly recommended to those who want to catch themselves up on the UK history of industrial/experimental music. Some of these tracks are still imposing, which speaks of how powerfully disturbing they were when originally recorded. (One caveat: it appears that the CD has been mastered from vinyl. Clean, but obviously vinyl. What happened to the original master?) An expensive import, granted - but worth it, especially if most of these artists are "new" to you. Features: Portion Control, Chris and Cosey, Metamorphosis, Coil, Nurse With Wound, 400 Blows, Konstruktivitis, Lustmord, David Jackman, SPK, MFH, Nocturnal Emissions, Attrition, Legendary Pink Dots, Bourbonese Qualk, Sirius B, and Bushido, in that order.

Difficult listening indeed...,
By A Customer
This review is from: Elephant Table Album (Audio CD)
This compilation of leading experimental/industrial acts features some rare CD appearances by the likes of Portion Control and Bushido. The music is difficult to listen to in the sense that you have to put up with annoying vinyl surface noise, something we thought we would not have to put up with anymore. Some of the entries (eg. SPK, NWW, Coil) are actually available in clean digital form on original albums by the respective artists. It's worrying to think there now seems to be no original master tapes in existence for acts like PC!
