Mixed in Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios , produced by Chico Neves , with the fantastic percussions of De Dalva and Ramiro Musotto , this album is a classic .Mixing Bahian AfroRhytmes with avant garde electronic , bossa nova with contemporary pop , Santtana made a fantastic and innovator album .

I am totally blown away by this album. Like many U.S. listeners, I first became aware of Santtana through a Putamayo collection -- Acoustic Brazil, I believe -- but this album, unlike that one, is overflowing with raucous energy. He leads his fellow musicians with just the right combination of precision and looseness to create a joyous racket that just builds and builds throughout the album.
If this doesn't make you want to dance and jump around, check your pulse. This is the happiest music I know. (Caveat: His subsequent albums, which are far easier to find in the U.S., are not nearly as good as this debut, though they have their moments.) |
