Early Marty Robbins and his mentor,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Elevator Boogie (Audio CD)
I purchased this CD as research material for the Marty Robbins biography I'm currently writing. I wanted to read what Frankie Starr said about Marty, and I wanted to hear Marty's earliest recordings. This CD contains four demos sung by Marty in 1949, two years before his first Columbia recording session. Marty wrote these songs and gave the copyright to Frankie. Marty's emotionless singing may have been due to the fact that the recordings were made only for transcription purposes, not to be played as records. He sounds timid. What surprised me about this CD was how much I enjoyed the music of Frankie Starr. It's too bad he never had a major recording contract. Billy Walker comes to mind when I listen to Frankie.
