This review is from: Eleven (Paperback)
This short little novel is epistolary - it is told entirely by means of emails both to, and from, a young man named Martin Davies. Martin is an process accountant, and he is bored and vexed with his job. He is a frustrated wanna-be author to boot.
Martin works in Cardiff, Wales, and the book (and emails) all take place on one day - September 11, 2001. Especially at the beginning, the emails are just hilarious, and reminiscent of scenes and characters from the movie Office Space. Martin also writes quite a few "saved drafts", where he is saying what he really wants to say to his bosses, and at times, to his "friends". What makes this novel so interesting, is that you see Martin gradually start to fall apart, as his frustrations grow, and the news about the events in New York (effecting everyone) start to bring it all to a boiling point. Certainly we all remember that day, and how the world, our outlook, and our priorities seemed to change. Especially on that very day, and the immediate aftermath. This is a very quick read - you can easily read it in an hour or two. As slight as the book is in size, it is provocative and will make you both laugh, and lament at Martin's life, and perhaps, our own. Recommended. |
