Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

The divergent marketing concerns of many a modern Hollywood film have increasingly led to the issuing of individual song-scores and traditional orchestral soundtracks for the same film, releases that sometimes seem completely at artistic cross-purposes. John Debney’s effervescent score for Jon Favreau’s loopy Christmas fantasy is a happy exception. Perfectly complementing a song-score that leans on Favreau’s decidedly hipster retro-lounge affections, Debney has concocted playful orchestral cues that careen with the same buoyant sense of innocent abandon as Will Ferrell’s star-crossed title character. The composer’s swinging "Christmas Medley" here wouldn’t seem at all out of place on its song-score companion piece, while his musical portrayal of the Elves and their magic holiday world is dominated by a whistling chorus that’s just ever so-slightly off. It’s instrumental holiday music fueled by a refreshing sense of fun – and a little contemporary, ironic sass. --Jerry McCulley

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely enchanting!, December 8, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Elf [Original Motion Picture Score] (Audio CD)
The moment I heard this during the movie's opening credits I knew I had to have the soundtrack's score. The composition for the opening credits instantly brought tears to my eyes.

ELF is a must-own for anyone with a heart and an ear for lovely music. It's a wonderfully sweet score that's light as a feather, cheering and never cloying. And while it's guaranteed to move you in the Christmas spirit, it's also a CD guaranteed to bring tears of joy all year round. Highly recommended for anyone who loves the lighthearted style of a musical fairy tale!

4.0 out of 5 stars magical, July 17, 2011
This review is from: Elf [Original Motion Picture Score] (Audio CD)
there is just something magical about the entire score, makes me want to relive the movie again while listening to the soundtrack. it has just the right kind of happy christmas mood. it is not genius but it hits the spot on making one happy and warm. on a side note: People should read the track listening before buying a CD.
