5.0 out of 5 stars Boult - Elgar - Boult - Elgar, May 30, 2010

This review is from: Elgar: Choral Works [Box Set] (Audio CD)
Okay, I'll admit, Elgar oratorios are not for everyone. They are heavenly, and though Gerontius is somewhat widely known (among 46 people in the UK), The Kingdom and The Apostles are seldom, if ever, heard today. Along with the the Elgar canon as recorded by John Barbirolli, the Boult / Elgar recordings are simply timeless. These works, hard to find at times, were finally re-issued on EMI's English Composers series. This boxed set was the first domestic release of all three oratorios and is a great deal for the price. Barbirolli recorded Genontius, but never committed Kingdom or Apostles to disc, so these Boult recordings are a must for any Elgar fan. The extra bonus of the Coronation Ode with Ledger is a nice perk and makes up for the rather predictable The Music Makers, another bonus on this set.
