5.0 out of 5 stars unforgettably moving performances, December 24, 2010
This review is from: Elgar's Tenth Muse - The Life of an English Composer (DVD)
As a longtime lover of Sir Edward Elgars music, I thoughly enjoyed this video. I was not aware of Sir Edwards affair with the pretty young violinist, Ms.d'aranyi as intelligently portrayed by Selma Alispahic. But for me, it was Faith Brooks marvelous performance as Alice Elgar, Sir Edwards beautiful, frail and dying wife that moved me to tears. It appeared both genuine and unforgettable. Anyone who sees this moving portrayal cannot but be impressed. She was so devoted to her husband and this has been well documented. And, of course, we cannot forget James Fox's understated performance as Sir Edward Elgar himself. The walk in the park and the conversation with Ms. Alispahic showed a side of Sir Edward I never knew and the tension built up between the two characters was very well dramatised with the morose Elgar and the impatient young lady. See this video for yourself and judge the fine acting for all its worth, and then decide if you agree with me that it was wonderful in both attention to detail, and atmosphere. I say Bravo to everyone involved in this moving little fantasy with the wonderful accompaniment of Elgars music. Bo Biffa

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Enough About the Muse -- Superficial, March 30, 2008

This review is from: Elgar's Tenth Muse - The Life of an English Composer (DVD)
Elgar's Tenth Muse was interesting, up to a point. However, the content was inadequate and superficial. If there had been more said about Jelly d'Aranyi, or about Lady Elgar, the DVD would have been more interesting. As it was, there seemed to be Much Ado About Nothing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very disapointing, March 31, 2010

This review is from: Elgar's Tenth Muse - The Life of an English Composer (DVD)
As an avid James Fox fan,I was looking foward to seeing ELGAR'S TENTH MUSE.I was very disappointed with what I saw.

James Fox,in the title role,is as always, excellent. And it is very nice and authentic to look at ,too, but the story makes no sense what-some-ever.

The "alleged" romance between Elgar and violinist, Jelly d'Aranyi as depicted in this movie ,is no more that mild attempt on Elgar's part to get a kiss from the young woman.

The scenes are just thrown together, the script not well written and Veteran Btitish charactor actress, Faith Brook, is wasted in the role of Elgar's critically ill wife, as are most of the other cast members.

The only things I felt at the end were confusion over what it was all about in the first place and ,relief that the whole thing was over.

Only a dedicated James Fox fan, like myself, would see a good reason to get this movie.
