4.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says it does February 1, 2010

So my wife and I canceled our satellite TV subscription, we grew tired of rising cost. We decided to try out the free over-the-air antenna and internet methods of watching TV. We always wanted DVR service but didn't want to pay for the DVR Box and monthly fee associated with subscribing to DVR service. After canceling our satellite TV subscription, I built a home theater media center out of a used Mac Mini (see my Mac Mini review), through research I found out about EyeTV and figured it was worth a try. Our Terk HDTVa over-the-air antenna was doing a great job of bringing in HD channels and like I said before, we'd always wanted DVR capabilities.

The installation of the EyeTv USB Tuner was easy, just plug the USB end into your computer and the cable end to the antenna (or cable splitter). The installation of software would of have been easy except for the fact that the default TV Guide data would not download so it seemed like the installation process was stuck. I researched and learned that others were having the same problem so I used another guide, TitanTv, which has remote scheduling capabilities and works with EyeTV.

FYI - I would totally skip the default TV Guide (free for one year, $19.95 thereafter) and just go with TitanTV - it works better, you can schedule recording from any computer that has internet, and most importantly it-is-free! Also (for those with a computer acting as a media center), plug your antenna into a splitter, have one line go directly to your TV and the other line go to the EyeTv USB Tuner. That way you have the option of watching live TV directly through your TV or through your computer using Eye TV software. Of course you can only pause, rewind and forward when watching TV through EyeTV.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ultimate TV Tuner March 4, 2010

I have a Mac Mini as the brains of my Home Theater setup. I have the Eyetv One, and the Eyetv Hybrid. This tuner is the best way to record free OTA HD tv brodcasts. You can pause, record, live TV straight from your Mac. Once you have a recording you can edit out the commercials, then either send it to iTunes, or buy the Eyetv App for the iPhone, and watch your recordings on the go. With the Software, and hardware you have the ultimate way to cut out your cable bill, and enjoy excellend HD broadcasts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just works!!!!!! March 29, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase
I got this for my Macbook Pro and it just works. Plugged it in and installed the EyeTV software and away I went. I would highly recommend this to anyone. I also was able to get the EyeTV iPhone app to work and stream recorded TV to my iPhone in 3G and wirelessly. The iPhone app had some weird glitches when setting up but once I got it working it's great.

Would highly recommend this to anyone looking for an easy way to get TV on their Mac. One note is to make sure you get a good antenna. I haven't yet so only get two networks and a few oddball channels. I need to put an antenna up in my attic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow, That Was Easy June 2, 2010

For context, I am new to MACs. I know to expect trouble loading PC software and even more integrating hardware. The EyeTVOne experience on the MAC was quick and easy! Everything simply just worked right from the start. Great reception, easy autotune, easy channel editing, nice picture and sound. Used simple DVR functions (pause and play) but haven't tried recording yet. We use the MAC for all AV with sound routed through older BOSE system.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing HD picture quality March 16, 2010

I bought this on a whim, along with an Terk HD antenna. I wanted to have something to watch some free TV in the bedroom without using a dedicated TV. The EyeTV One is very small, but has a flexible USB tail, unlike some others that are similar to a flash drive. I figured having it flexible would help with both cord compatibility, and keep it from getting broken off.

When the box got to my office I tried to load it on my PC desktop, which is a Vista x64 system. I loaded the driver from the CD-ROM, but there is no included software to run it. I looked up online and saw that is works with Windows Media, or whatever it's called, but that didn't work. Then from the Elgato website, there is a PC program to run it. I loaded that, but there was no selection available for the EyeTV One, only some other models. So I gave up. I noticed it mentioned it had Windows 7 drivers, but maybe that meant only Windows 7. Well, I bought this for using on my Macbook Pro, so it doesn't really matter to me that I couldn't figure it out on the PC. (I'm sure a true PC geek would know how)

On the mac, it was pretty much plug in, slip in, drag, click, and play. Maybe took 3 minutes to get it running. You can manually tune, or have it scan all your local signals. In San Diego, near the coast, I was able to get the main networks, quite a few -2 and -3 channels, plus a ton of Spanish language channels (all of which I then deleted). It works amazingly well for the basic CBS ABC NBC Fox etc. The recorder is full quality, as far as I can tell. I recorded 30 rock as I was watching it, then played it back and couldn't see a difference. You can schedule recordings, but I assume you have to have the computer in full wake mode, with the lid up.
