Customer Reviews

Good looking and well made.

The only issue I have so far, is that my second monitor (HDMI), will often not wake up or register after I plug my computer into the dock.
Little Green Viper
Works very erratically with Bootcamp on Windows 8.1, particularly the Thunderbolt display.

I did a lot of research recently on thunderbolt docks and since I had just recently bought an ASUS PB278Q to hook my rMBP up to at home, I was tired of plugging in all the cables. I was really disappointed with all of the drawbacks from the other manufactures docks. There wasn't a single dock that I saw that was a perfect fit for what I was looking for...until I saw this gem hidden down the list on Amazon. (I am baffled as to why this is not showing up further up the list)

I had purchased some products in the past from Elgato and was happy with the quality and design. I had no clue that they recently released a thunderbolt dock, so initially I was skeptical and figured they would have the same drawbacks as the other manufactures. This was completed wrong. The dock is easily the best one on the market currently.

Things I LOVE:
1. The dock is extremely small and light and had a great sleek aluminum outer shell. It blends in with my desk and hides nicely.
2. This thing is QUICK! I was able to transfer files at full USB3 speeds to my backup drive with no issues.
3. The USB port on the front is nice to have to quickly plug flash drives in, but I can see some would find it not as useful if you hide the dock.
4. Response from wake up is SUPER FAST. I have read other docks having issues waking up from sleep and having to disconnect and reconnect, but this dock has NO ISSUES.
5. This thing is SILENT. Other docks I have read there is a whining sound coming from their docks. I was really worried about this, but it seems like the engineers over at Elgato figured the power issues out that the other competitors couldn't.

Things I am OK with:
1. The dock seems to get a bit warm, but not super hot while in use.

I've been using this dock for about a week and it is doing exactly what I'd hoped. Despite previous reviews indicating otherwise, the ethernet port is working just fine for me. And with my MacBook Pro I'm able to get full 4k resolution at 3840x2160 right out of the box using the Elgato HDMI port. Likewise, the thunderbolt connection to my 1TB LaCie RAID is working flawlessly, as is the USB connection to my Samsung BluRay burner. So literally the experience has been plug-and-play with no fuss whatsoever.

Minor nitpicks: (1) No indicator light to tell you it's on and operating. (2) It runs quite warm. Even my 1G 8-port Linksys router runs much cooler than the Elgato dock.

The price of this unit is exorbitantly high, but if you have a laptop with a thunderbolt cable this is invaluable. All Thunderbolt docks cost roughly the same amount.

I originally purchased it to use USB 3.0 on my MacBook Pro that only has USB 2.0 ports. However, I didn't realize how convenient it would be to connect my external monitor, hard disks, ethernet connection and headphones - all with only one cord. Compared to other docks the front facing USB port was the selling point for me.

There are a few issues/concerns:
1) Ports do not provide high power. You cannot charge an iPad with the USB.
2) Thunderbolt is an old standard. Thunderbolt 2 already exists, although I could not find any Thunderbolt 2 docks. The Sonnet Echo, which was supposed to come out this summer, is supposed to be a Thunderbolt 2 dock, but it seems like it will never come out.
3) USB 3.1 Type C connectors should be coming soon. This connector will essentially replace Thunderbolt/Thunderbolt 2 since it has the same functionality. It also will deliver high power.

Tons of connectivity options, great build quality, BUT SEVERELY LACKING in the audio department. The audio jack on this dock outputs a mono signal! That is just unacceptable. I was excited that in addition to all the great connectivity options, I would be adding the audio input + output to my MacBook Air. But I was extremely disappointed to find that the audio output through the dock was mono and highly susceptible to noise interference. Please improve the audio end of this otherwise superb product!

Works pretty well, but one monitor (thunderbolt to HDMI) won't work going through the box, nor will my Bose speakers (plugged into headphone jack), so I still have to have a couple things plugged into my laptop, which sort of defeats the purpose. Otherwise it works fine, and I haven't delved into diagnosing the issue yet, so perhaps it will sort out.

Worked perfectly!!! This one device saved me from having to buy separate devices like a Gigabit Ethernet dongle, a DAC, etc. Now everything is neat > one single thunderbolt cable connects my Macbook Air (sitting on a Rain Design Mstand) to the Dock (sitting neatly under the Mstand). You couldn't possibly ask for a cleaner and more elegant solution to the need for extra ports and the ensuing cable spaghetti!

I would recommend this heartily to everyone... and oh did I also mention the USB ports are powered sufficiently to charge my devices which means no separate need for A/C adapters... woohoo!

This is the fourth Elgato T'bolt Dock I've bought for office MacBook Air users.
Pros:
- Comes with T'bolt cable.
- Good looking and well made.
Cons:
- At only 12" the T'bolt cable is too short to be useful.
- Ungainly PC laptop-style power brick.
- Pricey, but no more than other Thunderbolt products of its kind.
Summary:
Provides all the connectivity you need in one handy package.
