Editorial Reviews

2011 album from the R&B love man. The singer's accolades include multi BET and American Music Awards nominations and a 2000 Soul Train Award win for Best R&B/Soul Male album. He was one of R&B's pre-eminent love men and untitled King of R&B during the '90s heyday of hip-hop soul. That he's still topping the charts 14 years and six studio albums later is a testament to his musical legacy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ginuwine continues down the path of maturity on "Elgin" February 16, 2011
Format:Audio CD
In his fifteen year career, Ginuwine has been through quite an evolution. From his early days as a teen heartthrob, he morphed into making music from the perspective of an adult. For all his success and acheivements, he's also had his share of doubters, as well. If he wasn't being taken seriously for the perception as nothing more than a dancing pretty boy, he was also seen as one who would not have a lasting career if he were to break ties with his former producer Timbaland. While he has proven his critics wrong on both accounts over the years, one couldn't help but notice a gradual change in his music. It all started with the rather melancholy 2001 album "The Life", an album that was recorded shortly after the untimely deaths of both of his parents. He tried to relive his past glory on the follow-up "The Senior", but that album felt a little forced- and rather long-winded. His final album for Epic Records "Back II Da Basics" came and went with little fanfare, and he was written off in favor of the Trey Songz and Chris Browns of the world. He staged a comeback in 2009 with the successful- and criminally underrated "A Man's Thoughts", an album that showed his growth as a man as well as a performer.

In 2011, Ginuwine has returned with "Elgin", an album that picks up where the previous album left off. So much so, that the same producers appear on this album (Melvin "St. Nick" Coleman, Michael "Sleep" Naylor, and the album's executive producer Bryan-Michael Cox). The album starts off with the ballad "Heaven", which was penned by singer/songwriter Tank. The legendary songwriter Diane Warren contributes two power ballads "Break" and "How Does Your Heart Forget", although this isn't the first time he's performed a Warren song (See: "Superhuman" from "The Life"). On "What Could Have Been", he imagines a different life with a woman he once loved in the past, while he regrets an affair on "Why We're Fighting". While most of this album is ballad heavy, he does manage to sneak in a couple of uptempo numbers- the Trina featured "Batteries" and the synth heavy "Kidnapped". The closing track "Busy" shows him forgoing all of his other activities for quality time for his significant other. While "Elgin" does lag in a couple of spots, the positives far outweigh the negatives on this effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Ginuwine February 21, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Being a long time fan of Ginuwine, this CD definitely does not upset. There are many classic songs on there. His maturity keeps growing with each album, but he still makes great sounding music. This cd does not disappoint.
