Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6?This slim biography makes the life of this Nobel Peace Prize recipient accessible to a young audience. Pariser tells readers little about Wiesel's early childhood, except that he was bright and loved to hear stories. The events leading up to his incarceration at Auschwitz at the age of 15 are described, as are the horrors he faced there, at Buna, and at Buchenwald. Although the language itself is easy to handle, the atrocities Wiesel experienced make this a difficult book to read. Black-and-white and full-color photographs and reproductions, including prisoners in a labor camp, are included. Unfortunately, the book is too brief for readers with no background knowledge of the subject, and doesn't offer enough information for those who are more informed.?Micki S. From Kirkus Reviews

A clear, understandable account of a young Jewish boy's terrible experiences during the World War II. In 1944, when Eliezer Wiesel was 15, his town of Sighet (then part of Hungary) was invaded by the German army, who forced all the Jews to live in ghettos. From there, the Wiesel family were sent to concentration camps where, with the exception of Elie, they all were killed. Without fanfare but with dignified emphasis, author Pariser describes the cruelties and horrors of Wiesel's life as an inmate, as well as his subsequent liberation by Allied forces and his future vocation as a journalist, author, speaker, and political activist. Photographs from the WW II period establish a mood of somber witness. With its clear, narrative style, useful bibliography, chronology, and index, this is an excellent introduction to what is undeniably one of the darkest periods in modern history. 5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent gift for kids, April 10, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Elie Wiesel (Gateway Biographies) (Library Binding)
This clear and easy to understand biography of Elie Wiesel is aperfect introduction of Holocaust literature for kids. It's especiallyimportant since many of the survivors are passing away and there is always the looming threat of forgetting this crime against humanity. I would recommend this book for kids 10 and over -any discussion of the horrors might be a bit too extreme for any younger children. Elie's courage and joy de vivre are a lesson for everyone, not just the children.
