This is a compact biography of a man dedicated to bearing witness to the Holocaust so that the victims are never forgotten and to speaking out wherever and whenever "human lives are endangered" and "human dignity is in jeopardy." Complemented by sharply focused black-and-white photographs of his life and times, the straightforward text capsulizes the history of anti-Semitism and describes Wiesel's religious and close-knit family life, which was shattered by the Holocaust. Incorporating compelling quotes from Wiesel's writings (unfortunately, without specific sources), the author conveys the terror and agony of his loss of childhood to the Nazis. His rehabilitation after liberation from the camps and his postwar schooling are mentioned briefly. A list of books for further reading is appended. Ellen Mandel
