5.0 out of 5 stars Pass the Bread, Raven
I went into this read with little or no expectations. After all what else can be said about Elijah that hasn't been said already?? Well let me tell you that Swindoll found a way to breathe life into an old story. It was more than a book, more than a read. It was more like a sneaky way of writting a devotional that challenges your soul at the end of every chapter. I hated...

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting biography and commentary
A good audiobook on the life of Elijah. Swindoll follows Elijah through his life and makes comments on how the stages of his life relate to challenges for us today. He takes brief mentions and expands on how they made Elijah the man God wanted. It was especially interesting how much Elijah traveled. Not riveting, but an interesting read about the life of a great...

5.0 out of 5 stars Pass the Bread, Raven, January 11, 2004
This review is from: Elijah: A Man of Heroism and Humility (Great Lives From God's Word 5: Profiles in Character from Charles R. Swindoll) (Hardcover)
I hated picking up the book for 2 reasons: It stirred areas in my soul that I had forgotten to take care off. And that with the reading of a new chapter I was getting closer to the end. I will be reading the book again but at a snail's pace so as not to miss a drop from this refreshing book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Elijah Great Lives, Volume 5 by Charles R. Swindoll, March 29, 2002

Janet Turner (Auburn, Alabama) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Elijah: A Man of Heroism and Humility (Great Lives From God's Word 5: Profiles in Character from Charles R. Swindoll) (Hardcover)
So far I have read Elijah, David, and Moses. All three are excellent, but Elijah has been my favorite. If you are a Christian looking for a way to have more of God and draw closer to Him. Elijah will be of great benefit to you. Elijah was a man with a great annointing on His life and was selfless and dedicated to obedience. Charles Swindoll does show a balanced view of Elijah's weaknesses and strengths. Swindoll has a way of getting into the skin of each person he is studying. It was easy for me to relate to Elijah on a personal level because Charles Swindoll has a way of reflecting the human qualities of this giant for God along with the supernatural nature of God that lives within each of us. I enjoyed reading this book slowly so as not to miss one drop. :}

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Encouragement to Stand Firm in the Lord!, March 21, 2003
This review is from: Elijah: A Man of Heroism and Humility (Great Lives From God's Word 5: Profiles in Character from Charles R. Swindoll) (Hardcover)
Contrary to other reviews, I really enjoyed this book in the Great Lives Series by Swindoll. The book is an excellent encouragement to stand firm in the Lord even when others are compromising.

Among the excellent points Swindoll mentions are:

1. Lessons to be learned from Elijah's life.
2. Principles about God's leading.
3. Trust in the Lord and spend time alone with Him.
4. Reasons why Elijah may have been intimidated by Jezebel.
5. Do not let self-sufficiency replace your dependence on God!
6. Elijah had to learn self-denial and to rely on God instead of himself.
7. Living in sin will make you unsure and indecisive.
8. God will often use tests to shape us into His likeness.

Again, these are just a few of the many excellent points mentioned in the book. An excellent supplement to the Bible, I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!, December 28, 2007
This review is from: Elijah: A Man of Heroism and Humility (Great Lives From God's Word 5: Profiles in Character from Charles R. Swindoll) (Hardcover)
Elijah is one of my favorite characters in the Bible. One minute he's a great warrior beating out hundreds of other fake prophets, the next minute he's running from a woman, Jezebel,!! Chuck Swindoll makes his characters come to life, you live inside their skins with them and feel their pain and their triumph. This is a great book

5.0 out of 5 stars Full of Surprises!, January 28, 2011
By
When I picked this book up at a discount price, I had no expectations other than for it to be as interesting as the other books by Swindoll in his Great Lives series. I had no idea at the treasure that I would find inside.
Going through the Old Testament accounts of Elijah, Ahab, Jezebel and Elisha, Swindoll pulls out the life lessons to be learned from their interactions with each other.
Personally the first three chapters spoke to me the most when it drew out the reality and the necessity in waiting on the Lord, Preparing yourself for what God has in store, and standing in faith knowing God will hold up His end of the bargain.
No matter what stage of life you find yourself, this book will allow you insight into what God can and wants to do through you.
This is also a great resource for Pastors newly ordained into the ministry and for seasoned pastors who are struggling to remember why they do what they do. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Character Profile To Pattern!, December 11, 2010
This wonderfully and skillfully written character profile is an in-depth study on the life of Elijah that gives us valuable insight into standing for God in the face of personal challenges and public opposition. This `slow walk' through the story of the life of Elijah allows us the opportunity to see the plan of God positioning His mouthpiece and the power of God working through His anointed vessel. The combination of heroism and humility that Elijah displayed as he walked out his God-assignments is a powerful example for us today who find ourselves being challenged in our stand for God. If you need to be encouraged to continue to stand for God in the face of opposition, this book is definitely for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Elijah - The man of mystery is now like a close companion, February 17, 2009
This review is from: Elijah: A Man of Heroism and Humility (Great Lives From God's Word 5: Profiles in Character from Charles R. Swindoll) (Hardcover)
Little is known about Elijah. He comes on the scene for a few chapters and as abruptly as he came on the stage, he's taken away in a firey chariot. Although the Bible spends little time in explaining his life, Elijah becomes almost more pivital then King David himself, even tho almost four books are contributed to David and a few Chapters on Elijah, Elijah is one of the chosen two who meets Jesus on the mount of transfiguration.

Charles draws every bit of information he can from Elijahs ministry and explains it in detail. Elijah, once a man of mystery, now can be known almost as a close friend.

This is my favorite book from the series of 'Great lives from Gods word' and really my favorite book of all of Chuck's works (so far at least, I'm about to embark on a few more soon).

This book teaches us about Boldness, Faith, Being God Centered, Being self sufficent as opposed to being God sufficent, and the problem of feeling insecure

A great book and a must have for everyone

God Bless,
Your brother in Christ,
-Brian

This review is from: Elijah: A Man of Heroism and Humility (Great Lives From God's Word 5: Profiles in Character from Charles R. Swindoll) (Hardcover)
Charles Swindoll helps us to step into the life of Elijah and pull out the truths that show us God's miraculous hand in our lives. The message I took away was that God will supply our needs when times look most dire! If you have had issues learning to trust God this book is for you! Be blessed. Get the book about Paul though!

I loved this book. I love the way Charles Swindoll writes this series, he makes the characters relatable. Every time I read a book in this series I always learn something new and I always feel convicted to change certain areas of my life. Elijah was a truly great man touched by God and I thoroughly enjoyed the author's writing style and the way in which he made the Elijah real.
