5.0 out of 5 stars Elinchrom NAILED IT! June 28, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
I racked my brain looking for a studio lighting setup and after several days on Google checking site after site I realized that I was nowhere nearer to a purchase than I was when I started. There is too much information out there and none of it makes sense to a noob just wanting to get into a studio lighting package but I finally found some good advice from a local and went with this set from Elinchrom.

I was told to avoid cheap Chinese product, this product is Swiss and well made so step 1 complete! I wasn't sure about the differences between modeling lights and strobes and constant lighting, after some research I finally found out the differences and this product has both a modeling light and strobe. For info if you're not sure, modeling lights are really just to give you an idea of how a shot may setup before the strobe fires, it's not the final light and in some cases you need a small amount of light to be on in order to get camera focus or guide a model. Either way this setup has it. Constant lighting is not a strobe kit, it's a fixed light (constant) that you might use for a different look, there are many of these out there now, many are now using CFL bulbs in a cluster, not what I was looking for, I wanted a sharp strobe, got it with this kit!

Strobe power, originally I was told by my local brick and mortar camera store clerk that all I could find for about 800 bucks would be cheap 200 watt lights that I would still need to add radio triggers and soft boxes or umbrellas and stands to and in the end I wouldn't be happy and would end up spending a lot more. Guess what! This kit for 800 bucks has 400 watt strobes which are more than enough (actually maybe a little too much) for a nice home studio, come with soft boxes, nice Manfrotto stands and a radio kit! So not only did I do better than the local guy told me that I could, I upgraded to a higher power system which in this world is key from what I was told.

Setup was easy, took about 5 minutes to get everything but the soft boxes together (they are tricky so go slow), the radio was already set to go on my D7000 so no need to make any changes and about the only issue I had was a warning on the instructions about the proper voltage of the modeling lamp bulb. The warning states to be careful to use the correct voltage bulb, that it can be anywhere from 90v to 230v and the wrong one will cause damage. Hmmmm ... last time I checked, we use 110-120 here in the US so 90 sounds like it's going to blow up right as it gets turned on! I hesitated and called around to check, there is no direct contact phone number for Elinchrom as they are in Switzerland they recommend to call a local distributor. The local said it was ok but I also checked around for replacement bulbs and the BH Catalog stated 90 was the right bulb so I fired everything up, hit test and voila! We have strobes!

Sat my daughter in front of the kit and fired off some nice shots of her and over all can say that I'm very pleased. The only thing that I will be changing is a new transport system, maybe something from Pelican to be able to put a more secure box around the gear, nothing wrong with it now since I'm using them in the home studio but if I have to travel it would just make better sense.

Some other points, read the manual, the adjustments on the back of the unit aren't plain and clear cut until you follow along with the manual then you can easily set 1 light to be 3 stops hotter than the 2nd or play with the modeling light intensity. The beep on each light after flash is nice since you know they are ready, only issue is that if they don't beep exactly on time, it can get annoying so I turned them off.

The lights are plastic and at first feel chinsy but they are actually pretty sturdy, also they have an interesting handle that I played with a little on day 2, being very light you can actually hand hold these (even better with a remote camera trigger) and get the light exactly where you want it for a particular shot, going off stand may be something that I start to use on a regular basis! COOL possibilities!

About the only issue I have with these is the soft boxes and only because they are really a pain to assemble, you almost have to watch what you're doing or you'll poke them and ruin them but otherwise they will do just fine and once you do the 1st you'll understand how to do the 2nd an dno issue, BTW no instructions on that at all!

You can buy some cheap units but you'll be getting them replaced in short order, these in the 200 or 400 watt kits should satisfy anyone that is starting to venture into portrait and strobe work, did for me!

Highly Recommend!

4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding LIghts and Amazing Consistency November 26, 2011
I dont know why people continue to leave reviews that are bad for this light set and not even state why. These lights are extremely well made and always consistent for me. They are plenty powerful for any indoor studio and I have used them on several occasions outdoors on location. If you take a look at the reviews for this item on many other photography product and review sites, you will see how well they rate. The ONLY complaint that I have for them is that they are too powerful sometimes and there is not a lower minimum setting for the power. I believe their minimum power is 20watts, and I would love to have them go down to 2watts as the Alien Bees do in order to be able to shoot at wider apertures. Great buy no matter what! Highly recommend.
