Beautiful even light and very very easy to use.

I ended up spending more money on softboxes and other modifiers than the actual strobes themselves, but these are definitely good quality.

I racked my brain looking for a studio lighting setup and after several days on Google checking site after site I realized that I was nowhere nearer to a purchase than I was when I started. There is too much information out there and none of it makes sense to a noob just wanting to get into a studio lighting package but I finally found some good advice from a local and went with this set from Elinchrom.

I was told to avoid cheap Chinese product, this product is Swiss and well made so step 1 complete! I wasn't sure about the differences between modeling lights and strobes and constant lighting, after some research I finally found out the differences and this product has both a modeling light and strobe. For info if you're not sure, modeling lights are really just to give you an idea of how a shot may setup before the strobe fires, it's not the final light and in some cases you need a small amount of light to be on in order to get camera focus or guide a model. Either way this setup has it. Constant lighting is not a strobe kit, it's a fixed light (constant) that you might use for a different look, there are many of these out there now, many are now using CFL bulbs in a cluster, not what I was looking for, I wanted a sharp strobe, got it with this kit!

Strobe power, originally I was told by my local brick and mortar camera store clerk that all I could find for about 800 bucks would be cheap 200 watt lights that I would still need to add radio triggers and soft boxes or umbrellas and stands to and in the end I wouldn't be happy and would end up spending a lot more. Guess what! This kit for 800 bucks has 400 watt strobes which are more than enough (actually maybe a little too much) for a nice home studio, come with soft boxes, nice Manfrotto stands and a radio kit!

I dont know why people continue to leave reviews that are bad for this light set and not even state why. These lights are extremely well made and always consistent for me. They are plenty powerful for any indoor studio and I have used them on several occasions outdoors on location. If you take a look at the reviews for this item on many other photography product and review sites, you will see how well they rate. The ONLY complaint that I have for them is that they are too powerful sometimes and there is not a lower minimum setting for the power. I believe their minimum power is 20watts, and I would love to have them go down to 2watts as the Alien Bees do in order to be able to shoot at wider apertures. Great buy no matter what! Highly recommend.

THese lights are wonderful. I caution you to check prices first though. I got the exact same kit at Penn Camera for over $100 cheaper.

I use these as fill lights in shooting architecture (interiors) when needed. Beautiful even light and very very easy to use. I love them...but recently I've had an issue where the basic skyport unit the system ships with needs to be reset in order to fire the lights. I own 2 of these kits and have had the same issue with both units on two recent jobs.
- Updating here a year or more after my review. I've completely ditched the stock skyport reciever - they really are unreliable. I now use them w/pocket wizards and have shot dozens of jobs and remain thrilled w/the results. These are killer lights - LOVE THEM!

I have been researching a while for a lighting system. I evaluated the constant on - CFL bulb systems and the ever hot tungsten units. I couldn't find any high quality (those actual buyers would rate) on the CFL systems and the more I read from pros the more I didn't want to try them.

I am just a hobbyist and can't really say if this product is better/worse than anything similar. This is the only one I've owed.

Embarrassing as it may, I watched the included DVD (after I set everything up without using [the later found] manual! lol!) This dvd isn't about setting up the equipment but shows how to do some pro-techniques. Definitely worth my 20 min of my time.

So some things the product description does not really state that I think is worth mentioning (to those with similar interests):

-The D-Lite 4 IT heads can learn any model camera's pre-flashes if you do not know the proper code to set. How cool is that?
-The system can do above 1/125s (1/250s) sync speed.
-Has four mode modeling light - the one I like is the auto setting where the modeling light "mimics" the flash power set which lessens a lot of "guess work."
-Light boxes are great quality and easy to set up. I've read many horror stories on how difficult some can be... like I said, I've never messed with any until now and it was easy.
-I thought the light boxes would be flimsy - but they actually feel "solid/tight" and secures to the flash heads without any wiggling or cheap squeaking. ZERO light emits (leaks) from the attachment point. If I do any on-location work, I think the light boxes would be ok left setup in trunk.
-Flash heads are packed/shipped in the shoulder carry bag with the flash bulb in (not the model light bulb).
