Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2—By day, Eliot is a quiet boy who likes to read, but when the clock strikes midnight, he becomes a superhero. The youngster, who sports curly orange hair, large round glasses, and a green cape and matching boots, returns teddy bears to babies, rescues his town from rampaging lions, and stops a ship from crashing onto the rocks. Now he embarks on his "most dangerous mission ever"—saving Earth from a gigantic meteor. Eliot's adventures are fast-paced and exciting. A variety of fonts are used, making the text feel integrated into the action-packed illustrations. Done in vibrant pastel hues, the collage-style spreads match the tone of each adventure and include many details that youngsters will enjoy exploring. A worthy addition to kids-as-superheroes collections.—Laura Stanfield, Campbell County Public Library, Ft. Thomas, KY END

Review

Mild-mannered bookworm by day, international troubleshooter by night! Little Eliot, with curly red hair like his mother and large round red-framed eyeglasses, is a model child. Quiet and obedient, he reads nearly all day and regularly feeds his pet goldfish. But at night, when all are sleeping, Eliot dons his superhero garb (green cape and boots and briefs featuring a gold 'E') and flies all over the world solving major (and minor) problems. Among the former: He helps the Coast Guard rescue a ship from dangerous rocks, uses code-cracking skills to find the Queen's stolen jewels and launches a rocket that bursts a meteor on a collision course with Earth. He also finds time to return lost teddy bears. Cottringer's delightful fantasy is ably abetted by Smith's scruffy mixed-media illustrations, busy and bright and full of additional jokes (such as the ocean liner that sports the name 'The Rubber Ducky' and a bemused mountain goat he buzzes by in the Himalayas). Walter Mitty-class drollery that should appeal to children and adults alike. (Picture book 4-7) 32pg. --Kirkus Reviews, July 15, 2009

I love this book, and so do all the super heroes in my prekindergarten class! It is a charming read, not too long, and has many underlying character traits to teach young children. Without spoiling this, a little boy who seems quite unheroic, ends up helping neighbors, friends, and even the world through his talents. I am thrilled to have this book as part of my classroom library.

For me, this book is about imagination and possibility. My three-year-old just calls it the superhero book. We read it every night.

This is definitely a positive, non-violent twist on the whole superhero paradigm.

"Eliot Jones, Midnight Superhero" is a delightful, resilient book for children ages 3-7. Eliot is a quiet, ordinary boy by day, but after midnight, he transforms in to a Superhero who "hangs out of helicopters, skis down glaciers, and returns teddy bears to babies." He even helps the mayor catch and tame lions escaped from the zoo! Eliot is also a champion swimmer, an excellent sleuth, and a daring inventor (also a skilled jet pilot). His most dangerous mission ever comes from the world's most important scientists who plead with him to save the earth from a gigantic meteor. Once again Eliot uses all his amazing skills and after many adventures all around the world, Eliot saves the world from destruction. Naturally the Earth is grateful and the queen gives Eliot a "special award for his courage and ingenuity." However, since being a Midnight Superhero is taxing, Eliot continues quiet by day. Delightful, whimsical illustrations lead the reader through all of Eliot's fantastic adventures and safely back home again in this charming storybook.
