I have a 2 1/2 gallon bowl and I bought this to clean the water up. Pros- It picks up bigger particles. Cons- It is way too strong of a current. My betta was having some serious troubles against it even when the valve was barely open. Here's my suggestion to make it a great and cheap filter. Step one: Buy extra filter sponges, they only cost around $6 and trust me it's worth it. Step two: Take one of the extra sponges and place it on the end of the out-put cone. Step three: Buy some activated charcoal or carbon and place it inside an empty and clean tea/spice bag (about a teaspoon or so works). Then place bag inside the filter on the bottom over the intake area, underneath the inner sponge. With the sponge on the outside my betta loves swimming around it and against the now very gentle current and he can still float on top easily.

I bought this filter based on the reviews to replace the horrible tetra filter that came with my 1 gallon betta tank. After installation, I noticed there was a fairly powerful current in my tank, which my lazy betta fish did not appreciate.

There is an adjustment knob on the side of the filter, which, when set to the minimum, was still a little too powerful for my tank. To fix this, I took a piece of filter material I had lying around from my other tank, and wrapped it around the exit nozzle. This helped slow the exiting water and reduced the current.

Though this filter is advertised for tanks up to 3 gallons, I would not recommend it for anything smaller than 1.5-2 gallons.

I have a 360* View tank, and of course its a cylinder and u cant fit a normal filter. I was planning on buying an exterior canister filter for $60 since all the filter i looked at were far to large to fit in the aquarium without hindering my fish's space to swim.
Then i thought id give it one last shot at looken and i found this tiny little filter. Its small but packs alot of filter power. You can use the sponges that elite sells or even make one of your own, so your not stuck buying premade filter packs.
I have a 3.5 gallon tank and it was cloudy looking since the filtration system was lacking, and after adding this filter its crystal clear. Im rlly impressed. It adds extra oxygen and my fish look all the happier and look much more energized and i feel better knowing that they have a clean and healthy tank now.

Love that it can go anywhere in the tank so if i feel like doing a new scene in my tank it can be moved to be out of the way and not disturb the view.

This by far is one of the best filters i've ever owned. And i've had alot of tanks and filters.

if u have a betta , goldfish, platies, tetras w/e u got in a small tank this will do the job Extremely well.

will look foward to buying more elite filters for my tanks to come.

I just completed a DIY co2 system from a youtube video i saw and it specifically mentioned this filter. WOW! This filter generates micro bubbles through the current it produces and I'm sure it will revive my dying plants! Its probably not good for a fish bowl or of that size because it does produce a current and your fish would probably not like it.

i bought this for my Betta's 1 gallon bowl and it was too strong until i put a large decoration right in front of it and it made the flow perfect. Then the filter started getting slimy and it never did anything for the ammonia levels. I moved my betta into a fully filtered aquarion and put this filter away for a few months, but i brought it back out for another fish in a 1 gallon box shaped aquarium. This time not only did i block the flow with a decoration but i also took out the dinky little sponge inside and put in good quality activated carbon. Not only did the carbon slow down the flow of the filter so i no longer need to block it but it also does a fantastic job of keeping the aquarium chemistry balanced and the water clean and clear.

The product works great for Small aquariums. I used mine for my bettas, and my dwarf puffer fish. The current is strong, but it can be maneuvered to be less likely to blow your fish around. I rate this product 4 stars, because the filter can intake a lot of water and air, and leaves the aquarium with a bubbly curtain on the glass, although it works great. It could use some better filter cartridges. this one is a simple sponge. Overall, I would reccommend this for someone using it on a 5 gallon tank or less.

I've been using this filter for about a week in my 2 gallon shrimp tank and, so far, I am very happy with the results. Before buying this filter, I was using the under gravel filter that came with my tank but it worked so poorly that I ended up having to change the water manually everyday because the water was constantly getting cloudy and smelly. Within an hour after installing this filter the water was visibly clearer and I now only have to do weekly water changes (yay!) and the water is odorless. I even tested the water in my tank before the weekly change and the nitrites were at zero. Really, for the price and the size I am not sure if you can do better than this filter. Hagen Elite is certainly light years ahead of the Whisper 2-10i filter, which is noisy and all three Whisper filters I bought last year stopped working within a week.

Before buying my Hagen Elite I was worried that it would be too noisy or that it wouldn't be safe to use with shrimp. Let me just say that 1) it is SILENT and 2) my shrimp seem very happy with it. I have two red cherry shrimp and they seem to enjoy swimming in the current the filter creates and they are a lot more active than they were with the under gravel filter. Yesterday, I spotted one shrimp eating while hanging on the filter's intake valve so I would say the filter is safe even with little shrimp legs. I am not sure how the filter would work with baby shrimp, but it seems great for adults.
