5.0 out of 5 stars All Stars of Smooth Jazz
You can't complain when you put Lee Ritenour on guitar, Nathan East on Bass, Bob James on keys and Harvey Mason on drums. The kings of smooth jazz all joining together to form Fourplay, and release another incredible album in "Elixir". The musicians have been successful on their own, and when mixed together, it is hard not to put out something of this caliber.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing
My first exposure to Fourplay was "Between the Sheets" which I really like. I guess I was expecting more of the same. I think there is such a thing as too mellow and this appears to be it. I've listened to it 3 times now and it's still not growing on me. There's no polite way to say it, it's just boring.

The album is packed with good smooth jazz, mostly written by the guys in the band. There are some exceptional gems here like "Magic Carpet Ride" with some great solos from Ritenour and James. Phil Collins lends his voice and his lyrics to "Why Can't It Wait Till Morning", which is well done by the band and Collins' voice is very fitting. The title track is very jazzy, and what a great sound from Ritenour. "Play Lady Play" is a little more funky and allows East to step forward and slap his bass around a bit. "Licorice" also has a good sound.

I was pleased with this release from Fourplay, and it gets a lot of airplay from my smooth jazz collection. Fourplay is definitely a band worth pursuing, as well are each of the guys in the band. I have been a large fan of Ritenour and came across his work with Fourplay in pursuing him. His solo stuff is exceptional, and I recommend his Wes Montgomery tribute, "Wes Bound".

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Seductive, April 28, 2000

The song, "Why Can't Wait Until Morning" is perhaps the most beautiful song, I've ever experienced. The blend of seductive piano, guitar, and Phil Collins is awesomely well matched. The pictures that it brings to my mind tell a story that every feeling soul can relate to. It's mesmorizing. The whole CD is a masterpiece of smoothies -- progressive jazz style. Well done, Fourplay...well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars there's more here than you think!, April 18, 1999

this has got to be one of the best albums i have heard in quite some time.don't let the smooth sound fool you. there's so much going on here. listen to how the drummer accents, puncuates, and sparks the band with just the right rythyms and fills. he has achieved true mastery of his instrument.the keyboards color the sound, while adding harmonic texture on several levels. he also adds an oh so understated emphasis to the rythym. the bass player is the anchor in this group, yet he can improvise his bass runs in such a way that he leads you into the changes effortlessly.his groves are as funky as anyone . he's done his homework. the guitar player is a virtuoso, yet he dosen't remind you of it all the time. he knows when to play rythym, knows when to comp, and his solos are brilliant. this is truly an album of masters.hats off to Bob James,Harvey Mason,Nathan East,Lee Rit.et.al.

"Elixir" is my second favorite Fourplay album. I got turned onto them from my father. He had bought their first album and I really emjoyed it. Each time they came out with another one, I picked it up. Elixir came along and blew me away! One of my favorite smooth jazz CD's. The other Fourplay CD I really like is "Yes, Please". I have a review on that one also. If you want the definitive collection of Fourplay, get all of them, up to "Heartfelt". "Heartfelt" is OK, but they seem to be going in another direction with their music. I wouldn't recommend "Journey". "Elixir" is a definate "must have" for the smooth jazz fan!!

The title cut is alone, is a 'musical aphrodesiac'!! Put it on, take the phone off the hook, curl up on the couch with your soul-mate,...!!! They don't call themselves 'Fourplay' for nothing!!! Great to listen to on a cruise to the Bahamas!! Ultra smooth and ultra romantic!! The ladies ALWAYS love this one!!!
