Grade 2-4 While this book dramatizes the struggle that Elizabeth Blackwell had in becoming the first woman doctor, it contains several dates that conflict with many other sources: the year Blackwell was born, the year she entered medical school, and the year she graduated. Color pen-and-ink and watercolor drawings, along with the first-person narrative, help to make the story come alive. However, Elizabeth Blackwell: Pioneer Woman Doctor (Garrard, 1975) by Latham and Elizabeth Blackwell: the First Woman Doctor (Troll, 1982) by Sabin offer more specific and accurate information. This book is very good at describing the young life of Elizabeth Blackwell. Her father raised his children to be equal in their eyes and the girls' education was valued as much as the sons. Elizabeth also experienced sickness and death close to her which inspired her to become a doctor. Finally in medical school, some professors refused to allow her in their classrooms and fellow students mocked and harrassed her. Well, she made it! A great story for students and a good way to reflect how societies try to isolate and ostracize minorites.
