Don't play this in your PC!,
This review is from: Elizabethtown (Audio CD)
Sony's copy protection scheme installs harmful rootkit software on Windows machines. This software can crash your machine, and make it easier for viruses to infect you. By design, it is impossible to uninstall without advanced technical skills.
Sony recently released a patch to mitigate these concerns. However, the patch only addresses the issue of potential virus infection. Uninstalling the software is still nearly impossible, and if attempted incorrectly can render your CD drive unusable. Sony's Rootkit,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Elizabethtown (Audio CD)
This CD WILL install a rootkit on Windows machines. If you intend to play this on your computer, then you're going to screw up your own PC. Sony will install files on your PC without your permission, files that can't be removed easily. You'll wish you listened to us if you buy this CD. Don't think we're telling the truth, go to

Oh, Come On!!!,

I was so looking forward to the release of this soundtrack. How dissappointing! Good music - BAD technology. I will NOT be purchasing this title until a version is released with copying capabilities. How ridiculous is it, not to be able to play a CD off of your own hard drive!?! 5 stars for the music, but I can't actually rate the product that highly if I can't even play it when and where I want to. I would rather do without Sony CDs, than pay $$ for such an unusable product. Yes, I know I could just use a regular CD player, but that's not the point - and it's not always convenient either.

Not when there is malicious copy protection on it. Take it off and I'll buy it. What a shame that adult music (it ain't Hanson) like this has this horrible software on it that can destroy your computer.

Itunes version is not copy protected,

Sony CDs that are copy protected should not be bought - however this collection is available on Itunes w/out the nasty program - the music is good - I love Patty Griffen's song - one drawback - only one of the Tom Petty Songs that that were in the movie is on this sound track - "It'll all work out". "Learning to Fly" is Available on his greatest his album if you are interested.

A Journey to a Better Place,
By Brittany Rose (Winnipeg, MB) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Elizabethtown (Audio CD)
First in regards to the copy protect thing - this cd gave me no problems but that might be cause the drive/computer I have it in has no burner.
One thing can be said for Cameron Crowe...his movies might falter a bit (as Elizabethtown unfortunately did) but he knows how to put together a banging soundtrack. Whether you've seen the film or not you'll probably get the urge to take a spontaneous rural road trip, or to sit out back and start up a campfire with friends, or to just chill with someone special. A mix of folk, blues, and country from today and yesteryear this album is a gem that flows from track to track. The Nancy Wilson theme for the film sets the tone for the cd right off the hop - lots of guitars with a bit of banjo in there as well. Tom Petty's two contributions (Tracks 2 and 14) are heartfelt, relaxed tunes that are among the best on the cd. Elton John follows Petty & The Heartbreakers with a sweeping 70's power ballad, "My Father's Gun", which flows into the dreamy ethereal "This Time Around". Ryan Adams provides what I feel to be one of the best tracks on the album with "Come Pick Me Up" a slow blues builder with a fantastic chorus - one of the few recongizable from the film. Country inches its way into the blues circle a bit with My Morning Jacket & Patty Griffin's tunes. "Sugar Blue" by Jeff Finlin is up next and takes on a unique modern country sound with a real bluesy vibe to it. The 21st century is much more apparent on Wheat's "Don't I Hold You" a light-alt-folk-rock offering. Lindsey Buckingham's tune sounds like it was ripped right from the Garden State soundtrack but fits in equally well here. Then we go back in time again with the upbeat Hombres track "Let It Out". Another fave of mine comes up with Eastmountainsouth - a sweet folky duet, very Sheryl Crow-ish. The Hollies takes us back in time again, as does the other Tom Petty track, finishing off with the sweet tune "Same in Any Language" by I Nine. All in all a fantastic album for the summer that can be played at virtually any occasion. If you dig soundtracks - particularly ones with little-known talented bands - a la Garden State - then pick this baby up.

Problem with this CD,
This review is from: Elizabethtown (Audio CD)
Sony will not allow you to play this CD in your computer, without installing some very bad software. Read this article for the full story on what Sony is doing: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1880572,00.asp
From this day forward I will never spend another dime on content that I can't use the way I please. If I can't copy it to my hard drive and play it using the devices I want, when and where I want, I won't be buying it. Period.

A possible retraction of copyright software?,
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Elizabethtown (Audio CD)
When I first found out about Sony's copyright protection software, I was furious. I own about 3000 cds and want to be completely able to do what I want with the music I own.
In the past, when I have come across any copyright-protected cds that I could not digitize to put on my iPod, I would use my standalone cd-to-cd burner to make a copy. I hadn't had any problems doing that at all. I automatically did this with the Elizabethtown soundtrack, and found something odd. The first copy that I tried to make stopped the recorder at track eight, something that I had never encountered before. That was in 4x high-speed dubbing, so I tried making a copy in real time. It seemed to work fine doing that, so I put the burned disc in my computer and attempted to rip it for my iPod. To my suprise, the burned disc (again, made with a standalone burner) contained exactly the same tracks and song lengths, but absolutely no music. There was just a steady popping sound. So I decided to try ignoring the warning about the Sony software. I had actually seen it in action on one other cd, Neil Diamond's 12 songs, and expected it to act in the same way. To my suprise, however, iTunes immediately recognized the cd and allowed me to make a copy. Did Sony reissue the cd without the copyright software? If so, it's about time.

I didn't realize it was copy protected--thank God I have a Mac!!!!!,
This review is from: Elizabethtown (Audio CD)
I confess right now, I didn't even look at the label when I bought the CD. It was half off (can't imagine why!) and I scooped up the bargain because I loved the music from the movie.
But hide and watch, the Mac will be the next to fall to these corporate 'viruses' if we don't stop buying disks from Sony. |
