5.0 out of 5 stars The best book overall I have read on hunting elk.
The book is easy to read--early high school reading level. Since reading the book about 10 years ago, I have taken 15 elk and hunted in several states. Hart gives many ways to hunt elk. I have used all of them. He also gives many "no no's" in hunting elk. I have practiced avoiding all of them.

Overall, the book is well worth reading. I would recommend...

1.0 out of 5 stars ONE LEMON = ONE STAR
The book offers little useful insight into the subject. It is a
lemon buy for anyone minimally familiar with game management.

The chapter on tactics [Chapter 7] provides laughably narrow
perspective. I expected that the text covers far wider range of
environments than the authors chosen to deal with.

The chapter on strategy [Chapter 15] has an...

5.0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the Bible of Elk Hunting books, December 27, 2006

It's too bad that one reviewer had to bump a negative review several times in what looks like a deliberate effort to downgrade this book. The truth of the matter is that this book is one of the best books ever written about hunting the majestic wapiti. When many of the current titles on this subject have long been out of print, it's a pretty good bet that Wixom's book will be considered a classic and still be read by hunters seeking solid, reliable imformation about elk and how to pursue them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gets you closer to elk than anyone could ever imagine, September 6, 1998

This review is from: Elk & Elk Hunting (Hardcover)
I highly recommend this book to all serious elk hunters. Once you've read this book and applied these tactics, elk seem to fall out of the trees around you (Watch out! They're big animals!). You're foolish not to read this if you are going elk hunting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, direct advice on hunting elk, August 10, 2009
This book is an anomaly - Wixom gives clear instructions on elk hunting techniques in various situations. Contrasts with most books, which qualify every assertion with myriad exceptions, which simply undermines the purpose of giving advice in the first place. Some of the book is outdated, but the advice on methods is so concise and informative that it contains a lot more information than other wordier texts.

One weakness is the authors understanding of ballistics, but I've found a lot of skilled hunters don't have a lot of knowledge in this area. The guys who concentrate on guns to the point of obsession are usually shooters, not so much hunters. There's enough specialized material available elsewhere on this subject that the book would have been well served to leave it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Elk & Elk hunting, February 26, 2011
I've just starting Elk hunting, been bird & deer hunting quite some time now but new to elk hunting.

I found this at my local library along with 3 other similar books by different authors.

I have now ordered both elk hunting/infomational book by this author. Although no book will give you success without time in the field this book has help put me onto elk in my area. I live in Northern Utah and the information in this book has helped me to recognize signs of elk that I would have otherwised missed.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who plans hunt elk. This author was the best of the four books I read. If you knew me, you would know I don't part with my money unless I really like something or I fill it is worth at least twice what I paid for it. This book easily covers that.

As a side note for the one person who felt this book was not worth reading. I would like to point out first anyone from Berkeley, CA is highly unlikely to be a hunter and also the points she makes seems like maybe she was looking for someone to give her a map of exactly where to find elk with step by step directions on how to harvest an Elk. Maybe hiring a guide/outfitter like Hartt would a better choice.

Thank you to Hartt Wixom.

The book offers little useful insight into the subject. It is a
lemon buy for anyone minimally familiar with game management.

The chapter on tactics [Chapter 7] provides laughably narrow
perspective. I expected that the text covers far wider range of
environments than the authors chosen to deal with.

The chapter on strategy [Chapter 15] has an artificial division on
residential and nonresidential. It really does not include many
well known (and very useful) strategies. The book just boosts
around the topic, in an exaggerated "hunter's" manner.I guess most
people agree that strategy is the most tricky and important
component of any hunt. Only 11 short pages (of about 300) are on
strategy. I find it hard to believe into... [check it out --- look
at the table of contents].

The authors' effort to dress the style as academic is another
shortcoming of the book. The book is a thick volume of primitive
information, presented in a lengthly and heavy manner. The book
has no clear definitions. It does not contain summary notes, and
is difficult to apply to real cases.
