Beautiful and Mysterious,
By Pete (Sydney, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Elk (Audio CD)
I was quite surprised when I heard Liljestrom (the 'j' pronounced as a 'y' sound) to learn that she was Australian. That's not to say great music seldom comes out of Australia (cause I've always strongly felt that some of the best music comes from australian artists) but I've never heard an aussie artist produce this particular unique sound.
Her style is like a combination of portishead, lamb, bjork, with a voice not unlike tori amos's. However she still maintains her own sense of self, with her own unique talents. What I appreciate most from this album is the different moods she explores. Some songs are quite emotive and deep (like "phoenix" and "glow"), others are somewhat strange and have the western portishead sound (which is a good thing)(like "film noir" and "29 poisons"). At one point Liljestrom even sings without the strong beats most of the other songs contain, in "all of this." I found this album hard to find in stores and online(cause she's not popular enough-the good artists seldom are and are often overshadowed by the horrendous likes of australian idol winners) but it was worth the look. If you like the above mentioned artists I referenced you'd love this woman. |
