I bought this knife basically as a total gamble having never heard of Elk Ridge. I was looking for a fairly heavy duty knife for outdoor general purposes like limb pruning, chopping, camping, etc. I will break down the pros and cons below:

1. Good quality/value - quality of knife was better than I anticipated for price point. Fairly thick 440 stainless steel (coated black). Although blade wasn't super sharp out of box, the serrated edge and sawback were.
2. Good design - has the all main features that any good general purpose outdoor knife should have (but is surprisingly rare): 1) full tang construction, 2) a straight edge, 3) a serrated edge, 4) a sawback, PLUS it has a pruning hook built into it for pulling down higher underbrush and a toothed pommel. Very well designed.

1. The sheath, while adequate, is made of a somewhat flimsy, lightweight construction; could be more robust/well-made. (Not a huge deal though.)
2. Knife does not have a lanyard attached or lanyard hole drilled into it (although you can always add a slip on lanyard, which I highly recommend for safety while chopping).
3. Wooden handle. While admittedly fairly solid/well-made, I'm not sure how it will survive long-term rough outdoor use just because it's wood. I would have preferred some type of synthetic/composite handle for durability. But if it eventually breaks, I'll just wrap it in paracord, so not a huge deal.

That stated, I took it out and chopped on some (alive) Live Oak (which is extremely hard/hardy), and it ripped through limbs up to an inch or two with very little effort. Chopping larger wood (~8 in. diameter tree) was adequate; I should have sharpened the blade first. The serrated edge is super sharp and would cut through rope w/ no probs.
