Elk Tactics provides a verbally, but not pictorally graphic discussion of Elk hunting strategy. The authors focus on strategy and gloss over discussions of gear. You can find many references on gear and nobody agrees anyway so this is not a serious shortcomming of the work. I found the section on where to hunt very useful as a starting point for some serious pre-season scouting and map work. The descriptions of elk habitat and how to hunt it was very clear and logical. You will need more than this book to get the full spectrum of all that you need to know, but at the modest price it is highly recommended. I appreciated the author's contribution to the field of elk hunting literature and am confident that you will also.

This is one of the best how-to books on the market regarding the habits and lifestyles of the North American Elk. Easy read, with numerous examples of what to do and what not to do. The author has a great knowledge of elk and their behaviors. I suggest this book for any novice or even experienced Elk hunter.

I grew up hunting whittail deer and reading about hunting whitetail. So when I bought this book I thought it would give you a lot of information like that. I can sum it up in a few words. When it is warm hunt high when it is cold hunt low. Try hunting around water. That is about it.

One of the best I've read,

This is one of the best overall books on elk hunting I've found, whether for bow or rifle hunting. It covers the basics, from planning, to scouting, to what areas on the mountain hold elk, to tactics for daybreak, mid-day, and sunset. It has tips for calling, dealing with "problem" elk, and how to handle different situations in the field. Best of all, it doesn't spend endless pages droning on about how you need a 500 magnum shoulder buster to kill an elk. It has about 20 pages of very straightforward, practical advice for the right equipment needed for elk hunting.
The tone is very conversational and the book includes a lot of engaging stories. Overall it's very readable, contains almost no fluff or spectacular opinions. I got a copy from my local library, read it, then immediately ordered two copies - one for me and one for a friend. I'm loaning it to all the guys I'm hunting with this fall. It's going to be a great introduction for the newbies in the group, and the old-timers will learn a thing or two as well!

Highly Recommended to All Elk Hunters,

This is a very good book for new and experienced elk hunters. I found the first hand experiences of the authors extremely helpful in my preparations for the season. They share their own ideas on many aspects of elk hunting that helped me in the planning phases of my next hunt. I found the information on set-up and calling most helpful but enjoyed it all. Most hunters I know are always seeking new ideas on how to improve their success ratio and this book definitely provides some excellent information to consider the next time you're in the field.

Very well wriiten book on elk hunting. Not fluffy and very informative. Could have been longer and a bit more detailed in some aspects however.
