In "Elkheart," critically acclaimed naturalist and essayist David Petersen presents a deeply personal, intimately informed, and (by his own admission) "somewhat eccentric" portrait of the North American elk, or wapiti, and its wild and woolly world.

This review is from: Elkheart: A Personal Tribute to Wapiti and Their World (Paperback)
I read this book for the first time a while back and was completely gathered up in Petersen's writing about his world--the elk, the land, the pursuit of not only the animal but of peace in this anxious time. I neglected to put my 2 cents' worth here then, but have recently reread the book and was captured again by all of it. This is in my opinion a must-read for anyone interested not only in hunting (in this case with traditional archery equipment) but also in essential wildness and the quiet, personal experience of entering that shrinking world.
